Of all the weird things: tongue issues?

Because why have a normal problem in 2020?

On Saturday, felt like I had a really horrible taste in my mouth all day. Couldn't get rid of it for anything, and was definitely interfering in enjoying the taste of anything. Sunday, I woke up and the bad taste was almost gone, but my tongue is sore and tingly (not in a good way). Eating and drinking is uncomfortable (although do-able). I have absolutely zero other symptoms of anything else. WTH?!

did you recently eat too much pineapple or an unripe persimmon?

Such an odd year with so many odd things happening. Or maybe we are more aware of our body's reaction to things.

If your tongue is swollen, you will need to drink or eat anti-inflammatory anything. Is it whitish or reddish with bumps?

This happened to me after eating a very spicy meal. It went away after 24 hours.

NP here. I have a geographic tongue and it has never felt the way OP describes.

Is your tongue swelling at all? If that's an issue, watch it very carefully. My dad's tongue randomly swells up at times and has come close to closing off his airway. Really hope it isn't that and if it sounds familiar, I can find out the name of his condition.

With all that said, take a benadryl and see if it helps.

My geographic tongue is almost exactly like that when it first starts especially if I have eaten spicy or acidic food.

Usually symptoms go away pretty quickly (24 hrs at the most) and then I can get the telltale patterns or none at all.

OP how are you doing now?

TY everyone for trying to help me figure this out. I don't think it's geographic tongue. My tongue is whitish overall and the papillae are really raised -- although I have to be honest, I don't look at my tongue in any detail on a regular basis, so who knows. But there are no obvious smooth spots or sores. It's just really sore, tingly, sensitive, and feels slightly swollen. Eating still hurts. Hasn't really gotten better or worse since yesterday.

I'm not even sure what kind of doctor to go to if it gets to that point -- ENT? GP? Dentist?

And no, I haven't eaten anything exotic in the least! After this started I switched to Sensodyne, but I haven't even been using new products or anything.

Are you post menopausal? Did you have any fillings removed recently? Any MRIs? A few threads on DCUM with sudden onset of weird mouth and tongue issues.

I bought a tube of Tom's of Maine toothpaste out of curiosity and used it until it was gone. Then I used Crest and felt as though I rubbed chemicals all over my mouth.
