Apartments in Key Elementary boundary

Anonymous
We are hoping to find an apartment or house rental within the Key Elementary boundary. Can anyone suggest which apartment buildings might be good for a family with two young children? I get the sense that some buildings might not be too kid-friendly (more for young professionals, etc.) but perhaps I'm wrong about this.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

There are many apartment buildings in the Clarendon area that feed into Key and Science Focus. We live in one of them. There are not many families with kids though. Most people are young professionals, but we love living here. Close to everything, very walkable, near metro, great restaurants and shopping. Several parks within walking distance too. There is a building at 3000 Washington Blvd, and several others.

OP are you talking about the Arlington school or the one in DC in Palisades?

Thank you for the response. I meant Key elementary in Arlington. Any suggestions?

What are people's thoughts on Science Focus? There website is not particularly impressive although I know that is not always important.

Several of my neighbors send their kids to Science Focus, and they all love it. When my DD was entering KG, we toured Science Focus, Key, Taylor, and ATS. We liked Taylor and ATS the best. We are in the SF zone, but transfered to Taylor, mainly b/c we were impressed by the administrators.

There's an Archstone building that's actually adjacent to Key. Archstone has short-term leases, so there are a lot of diplomatic and military families passing through, but that's all they do, for the most part -- pass through.

We staying at Courthouse Plaza for a few months, and there weren't a lot of kids, but the soundproofing was great, so ours weren't bothering anyone.

Thanks! So it sounds a bit like staying in an apartment with a family in this area would be somewhat temporary (the prices do seem high...). Does anyone have thoughts about the Key school-in particular, what is the environment like and is it a high pressure school?

Wait, so you aren't sure about Key? If you're still looking, Arlington schools offer orientation tours in the spring (not sure when, but the APS website should have information, if not now then soon), and those are a great way to meet the principal, get a sense of his/her priorities, and just generally pick up on the vibe of the school.

I know parents who were very happy with Key and others who were totally turned off by the principal.

Secretary of Education sends his child there. I think that definitely gives it a huge stamp of approval because he could pretty much live anywhere in the DC area and choose any public school and he chose Science Focus.

But what's right for Duncan's children may not be right for yours. One of the great things about Arlington public schools is that they offer such variety, so there are a lot of ways to find your child's niche. But one kid's niche is another one's nightmare.

We were creeped out by our tour of Science Focus -- even the songs in music class were about science. For some families, that's great. Take the tours and see what's going to be great for you.

Thanks for the heads up on the school tours-we'll definitely check them out. Very true that what works for one child may not for another. From what I've heard about Key - and the immersion being a high priority for us - we're pretty sure about it, but it's always good to keep an open mind. Thanks again!

I'm not positive but I think Colonial Village condos are in boundary for Key. Maybe there are some rentals there.

Pretty much all of 22209 (Rosslyn) is Key I believe. At least the two people I know who live in that zip are zoned for Key. They both live in townhouses that are close to metro but not right on the Wilson/Clarendon Blvd corridor. You might want to do a search on mcenearney.com or some other real estate site to see what listings there are. IMO, townhouses are generally more family friendly than apartments and there are some nice parks around them, too.
