10th Grade English Required Reading: what's your curriculum?

Anonymous
I'm interested in what the various public and private schools are requiring this year for their students. (THat's why it's in this sub-forum and not in a more specific one).

I'm wondering if our private is sticking rather closely to the local public or doing their own thing, and how closely in general most schools around here are with their English Lit requirements.

So...could you please post what your 10th grader is/will be reading, and which school?

Thanks!

My 10th grader is currently reading Oedipus the King. The other books I bought for this year are The Premier Book of Major Poets, Death of a Salesman, Romeo and Juliet and Fences. Fences was summer reading. He is in an all-boys Catholic school. Last year, they spent 1/4 of the year on writing, maybe more so I imagine it will be the same this year.

What's yours, OP?

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

First one is a "graphic novel", aka comic book. Not really on board with that. Also doesn't seem like a lot to me. Ditto THe Hate U give, which has a very low lexile level.

The Odyssey
The Merchant of Venice
Frankenstein
A Lesson Before Dying
and then she’ll see.

I think my 10th grader is reading

Brave New World

At least those are the ones I know about so far.

Looking at those lists, I wonder what kids in IB high school programs are reading.
Any feedback?

So far only short stories and students choice of book. It seems nearly impossible to get everyone a hard copy of a book, but maybe they could try to get people to pick up in person and get the rest of the students an online copy of the book.

I would be happy to buy books on amazon, but they cannot require everyone to do so

Yuck to both of those. What a waste, so many classics being supplanted by political garbage and poor writing.

Yeah, that list would probably have me complaining to the English department

Persepolis is an amazing graphic memoir about a woman's experiences growing up in Iran. It has won numerous accolades. Just because it's not Moby Dick doesn't mean it's not worthwhile.
