Hiring a sitter - what precautions should we take?

Anonymous
We are resigned to a year of distance learning after DC announced their "reopening plans" which are only for a select few. Both parents work but are woking at home. We have a 9 year old and a 7 year old. The 7 year old is struggling with distance learning - he constantly needs help or to be told what to do. It's been hard for me to focus on my work. Thus, we've decided to hire a sitter to sit with him for a few hours a day and help him focus on school, and allow parents to focus on work.

We have been generally risk averse. We shop online, we see people outside with masks on. We are trying to decide what precautions our family and sitter should take. She is a college student that lives at home with her family. He mother works in a childcare center. I don't think our sitter goes out and parties, etc (but you never know). Anyhow, should we all wear masks during the hours she is in our house? etc?

Make sure the room they work in is extremely well ventilated. Run your AC fans (changing filters) and air out the room with fans and fresh air. Disinfect all surfaces a couple times during her time with your child. Assume the sitter has covid and proceed accordingly.

Masks for sitter and the kids when they are in a room with her (assuming you and spouse will be in other areas of the house working).

Air purifier for the rooms she’ll be in.

Ask if she’s willing to mask everyday and proceed accordingly. That may mean finding someone willing to wear a mask. You will need to wear a mask when around the nanny and your kids will need to wear them all day as well. Naturally, this means everyone will eat and drink ursine; what are your plans for inclement weather?

Or you could decide to not worry about the mask, and everyone can comfortably eat and drink inside.

And everyone masked, of course. That’s a given.

NP. If I am to assume that the sitter has Covid, I would not even consider hiring her. Also, a sitter is not a teacher.

I think anyone in the same room should wear a mask, but I wouldn’t if I were upstairs and the sitter and kid were downstairs. I would provide a lot of sanitizer.

I would ask her to be candid with you about risky activities and not up come if she has symptoms. It does add risk, but it sounds like you really need the childcare.

Of course you need to assume she has Covid. You need to assume EVERYONE has Covid and act accordingly. That is the whole point to all of this.

I wouldn't bother with masks. The chances of covid are just not worth the constant stress.

And there's no evidence that a non n95 helps indoors

Of course there is evidence that masks help indoors!!! Look at surgeons in an operating room.

Stop being an idiot.

Surgeons wear n95. PP said there’s no evidence for NON N95, and there isn’t.

Um, you mean the time that two Missouri hairstylists has COVID but didn’t infect any clients because they were masked? Or like every study ever?

You can either mask or bubble up, but masks are effective indoors. That’s why we wear them in grocery stores, etc. the mask can’t tell if it’s indoors or not!
