Transferring as a sophomore

My DD got wait listed at VT so she’s at Mason now. She really wants to transfer fall of 2021. Anyone else have a kid transfer after their freshman year? Any tips ?

Tell her to get good grades at Mason. Your Freshman year grades are by far the most important part of a transfer's app.

or transfer to NVCC now and do well for two years

She should. VT will accept her. She should state on the application that she was waitlisted at VT prior, and really wanted to go.

OP here. Thanks for the encouraging replies ! She’s doing well in her classes and we’re hopeful she can make the change

I transferred after freshman year. I got very good grades. I wrote a good essay.

I wanted out of where I was so sooner was better.

My kid is thinking of going the same. She was accepted at VT (off of waitlist) after she had already committed to other top choice. But has been there doing zoom classes and getting pretty depressed (prob because of restrictions, in addition to being far from home).

But I told she could apply to transfer if she thinks she wants to. There’s nothing to lose by applying. And she can see how she feels after next semester because decision day isn’t until May.

I did, it was fine.

to OP: VT has online instructions for applying for a transfer during first year. However, I think it is your daughter’s class is the year when VY was oversubscribed... so it may be more difficult than usual.
