DH's bright idea - burning wooden slats of bed in fireplace

Anonymous
DH's bright idea.....we ran out of firewood. So he takes the wooden slats from a bed (slats that were supposed to be thrown away) and burns a couple in the fireplace. It burned for quite a few hours with both kids (toddler and infant) in the area. When I saw it, I freaked - what the hell?? I mean, you are only supposed to burn certain wood indoors. What if there are chemicals or whatever that were released??

Someone more knowledgeable than me please tell me what happens when you burn this sort of wood. Has there been danger to our kids who inhaled that smoke for hours?

TIA

It's fine.

Depends on what the wood was treated with, or painted with. Or if it was even wood, or a composite, lacquered, etc. It's definitely not a great idea, but if your kids seem ok, I wouldn't worry too much about it. But don't let DH do that again. ANd have your chimney cleaned, it can leave corrosive traces in the chimney that can lead to build up (ie. chimney fires).

When I was little, my dad once burned bowling pins that he found on the street. My two siblings and I are fine-all college grads and no crazy ailments.

My mom once started a fire with gasoline in the fireplace. We survived. It's probably fine.

I think I know how she felt. Sometimes it is impossible to get a fire going.

Most wood slats are untreated wood and would be fine. The issue would be if someone burned painted wood or the treated wood you build decks and fences out of. You should be fine. We burn bits of unfinished, untreated wood all the time to boost the firewood.

My brother got seriously intoxicated by smoke from treated wood. I would guess that if your children didn't show any symptoms by now (I mean up to 24 hours after exposure) they'll be fine.

LMAO!

If it was treated with anything really toxic, it would have smoked you out of the house.

Still, this was not a great idea, buy your husband a boy scout manual and tell him to read it.

OP here - thanks for the advice and making me feel a little less freaked out. This is what happens when you marry a nerd - they are adorable, but man, sometimes, the common sense isn't there......still love 'em though!

Happy Friday all!
