Bought a house near Fort Totten - Having regrets

Anonymous
I bought a home a couple months ago near Fort Totten, I am about .5 - 1 mile from the Metro.

I really dislike the area, I find there's not much within walking distance to do, some of the areas I feel a bit unsafe walking around (single woman), amongst other things.

I prioritized price over what I actually enjoy in my day to day life. Yes I know this was a big big mistake. Any advice? Should I think about renting it out?

What street? That area is coming around but may take awhile.

give it more time. I have buyers remorse too and I live in a great place. it's normal.

Being a DC landlord is not a picnic, but renting is always a possibility.

Another idea - get a bike. You'd be surprised how much your territory opens up once you start biking around the city. You'd be in easy access to Petworth, Kennedy St, Takoma Park.

Fort Totten is boring but I can't imagine with all the development in the next 10 years the area will still look like what it does right now. You're pretty close to U street and Columbia Heights via Metro, is that an issue if it's not walking distance?

Agreed! Give it longer. I bought in an area I have lived in and love and still had regret and went back and forth if I should have done something else. Maybe give yourself a year to reevaluate?

Where did you like to hang out before?

I hate FT, feel bad for you OP

I think a couple months (particularly during the Pandemic) isn't enough time. Give it at least a year!

yah what id you think it would be like in a lower end area on the edge of town? Did you buy into the DC address hype

This. In addition to expanding your territory, I personally feel less vulnerable on a bike. Nothing is 100%, but being on the road and moving a little faster helps.

Which direction from the metro?

Better bring your phone and hope they don't take it when they take your bike, that way you can uber home.

Are you near the waste transfer station? At least you can easily recycle your used batteries and paint. I just throw mine in the trash.

Then there's the Rock Creek Cemetary that's probably happening come halloween.

Always seek the silver lining, OP.
