Cursing as a teenager

Anonymous
My child plays a lot of video games with his friends, like a lot of other teenagers do. Recently a lot of cursing and swearing while playing video games occurs. I know it's just as a joke and it's very normal, but should I be affected by it. He says that it is not directed towards me and it shouldn't affect me, I just don't want to hear it. Should I consider moving his computer in his room where the noise doesn't bother me? I'm not sure what to do here. TLDR: teenager cursing while playing video games with his friends, should I be mad?

A teenager is old enough to learn about times and places that it is acceptable to swear (trash-talking with your friends) and times and places that it is not (in school, in church, at work, etc.), as well as words and phrases that are never acceptable (racist and sexist slurs, for example, or bullying others). Definitely old enough to be aware of context. If it bothers you, you can move the computer, or you can just tell him that you don't really like listening to his profanity while he's playing and tell him to tone it down.

My teen is like that sometimes but he is in his room. Sometimes he gets too loud and I'll tell him to keep it down. He doesn't curse in other situations so...

Swear words have a time and place.

Cursing out another human being? Unacceptable.

Cursing when you stub your toe, drop something, encounter an inept Maryland driver (but do not engage, swear in the privacy of your own vehicle), or another stressful situation? Acceptable.

Try better at signaling next time. I mean really, all you have to do is try.

If you are bothered by it then tell him to stop. Your house, your rules. He abides by the rules or the game gets taken away.

I don't want to hear it except in extreme situations. I would tell him if he can't play without cursing then he can't play.

This is so weird. I cursed around my friends all the time, but never around my parents because....I wasn’t allowed to. You‘re the parent and you get to announce that your child may not curse around you. If his compulsion to cuss is so severe that he cannot inhibit it, you get to announce that video games are done until he finds those magic powers deep in the recesses of his soul that obey his mom.

cursing is a sign of vitality and prosperity. if hes swearing, that means he is happy. also if you are upset that he is using that language towards his friends, all his friends are hallucinations caused by his severe schrizophrenia, so he really isn't hurting anyone.

I went to a posh all girl’s high school most of you have heard of and swore like a drunken sailor. We all did. After graduation I went to an Ivy where we all swore. Then I grew out if it (somewhat) when I went to med school, had kids, and got a job.

Move his computer and let it go.

What?

Cursing is fine if it is just a jokingly matter. Although if it gets too rough you should make consequences. Your kid might also have schrizophrenia.

DS is a teenager and he plays a lot of video games. My rule is: if I don't hear it, I don't care. If he forgets to close his door or if she shouts so that one can hear it through the closed door across the house, he gets one warning. If he does not respond to the warning, playing video games is over. The latter only had to happen once. Now, he knows the rules.

If he's mature enough to cruse, he should start learning context of when it's ok and when it's not appropriate. It makes you uncomfortable, and he needs to respect that. Give the options of moving his computer to his room and using a volume that you can't hear, or to keep it where it is, but refrain from cursing when you're there. He's going to pick moving to his room, but it will give him some context for the move.
