This is just a rant because as we start thinking about Halloween and trick or treating I’m seeing local governments (the same ones who are opening restaurants and small venues) saying trick or treating is unsafe. While it might be a small risk, what’s the actual difference between my kids being outside in masks walking around on this day vs any other day. Also tired of seeing tons of adult pick up games of soccer/ basketball, etc meanwhile youth sports haven’t been permitted. Why are we just willing to say that kids get nothing during this pandemic, meanwhile “businesses” need it? I’m so tired of commerce and capitalism dictating what is permitted and what’s not while kids are left to languish. Outdoor masked activities for kids are crucial to the wellbeing during this time, wtf is wrong with our local leaders (a lot, I know). Between the schools continuing to stay closed despite 7+ months to figure it out, youth sports being banned I’m pissed. Trick or treating is proving to be the straw that might break my back. / end rant.

We don’t have a national covid plan. It’s the orange Cheeto that’s dictating the rules. You are worried about Halloween? Seriously there are bigger fish to fry. Grow up. |
I don’t know where you are, but my kids have been swimming with a team for months, and soccer and other outdoor sports are going strong. Unless trick or treating is outright cancelled, lots of kids will be doing it. I know mine and their friends will be, and adults in the neighborhood are figuring out ways to offer candy in a socially distanced manner. |
If you are in Montgomery County, please write your Councilmembers and tell them to start prioritizing kids (and schools) and not bars and restaurants. |
Its all overreaction and unsupported in science. Socially distance, wear a mask and have a great time! That's what my kids will be doing and the neighborhood listserv is alight with suggestions for how that will happen.
Closing schools is totally unsupported by science. And it exacerbates education disparities. Kids don't transmit this virus the way adults do. Until schools are open, businesses can't really open. Bars should be closed (because, science). Restaurants, not so much. Distance, wear a mask, wash your hands and move on people! |
I’m with you OP. My 20 something colleagues are going to indoor gyms and going dancing at bars. How in the world is social distanced ToTing even a question if this is what others are doing? |
Because kids don't vote so they're an easy group to target. And they can't complain.
I peros |
Totally absurd that the lockdowns pertain to people who aren’t affected by Covid. Kids. |
Continuing... Computer burped. I perosnally think if bars can be open kids can trick or treat. |
I am with you OP. Kids are bearing a huge portion of the pain from COVID, from loss of schooling and all that goes long with it, to food insecurity, to social isolation, to few opportunities for exercise and freedom, etc. no one is prioritizing them. Certainly not the leadership of MoCo. |
ITA. This is something kids look forward to for months. It is outside, masked, socially distanced. In the midst of so much sadness for them, why take this away too? |
I agree totally. Why isn't the fact that the schools are closed a major issue in this election? Why isn't on the front pages of the newspapers on a daily basis? We are sacrificing a whole generation of citizens. In Canada, the premiers of the provinces are giving daily news conferences about the fall surge and what people need to do to preserve the school year and keep the schools open. It is in the news daily. |
Please get a hobby. We don’t have the rapid testing in place or the amount of ppe. When was the last time you set foot in a public school in the dmv? Pre-pandemic, they were overcrowded. You can’t social distance. |
My kids will gladly give up EVERY Halloween if they can go back to school 5 days a week this school year. |
We would too. We would also give up sports and outdoor play dates and just about anything else. However no one presents that choice. It’s give stuff up so places that need to be in person to earn money can open. So since my kids can’t have school I will darn well give them low-risk things like socially distanced trick or treating. |
