How To Keep Two week Old Awake?

How to keep two week old baby awake to eat? He doesn’t get full feeds because he falls asleep ( both on breast and bottle). Any advice is helpful.

Id just go with it. He’s still in the fourth trimester. It’s okay if he eats frequent but small amounts. Being born is tiring - let him rest!

Change his diaper before a feed to make sure he's 100% awake to begin with and then jiggle his foot to keep him awake during a feed!

Blow on his hand or foot

Oh love, just feed on demand. Infants just eat & sleep. He’s full. He’ll sleep, then wake up hungry.

My son had trouble gaining weight because he'd always fall asleep while nursing. Try lightly tickling his foot, cheek, or under his chin. Or remove the breast/bottle and if he fusses, offer it back. I alternated methods until his weight gain was enough.

We had this problem. One of our kids was a premie and little- we needed to keep him awake to feed so he'd gain weight. They told us to strip him down to a diaper so he'd be cold. Tapping the bottom of the bottle helped too.

OP here. I believe feeding on-demand at this age is the best. What I don’t like he is he will drink maybe 0.5-1 ounce and fall back asleep. We will try for like 30 minutes to get him to eat. Sometimes he will take more, sometimes he won’t. Then he will wake up like 10 minutes later screaming for food, and then he will drink 1 ounce and fall back asleep.

The doctor said we need to supplement because he did not regain his birth weight. We are trying to feed him every 2-3 hours but it’s hard to get him to eat much because he just wants to sleep.

I had this problem too and the pediatrician wanted him eating for longer. I kept a damp wash cloth next to me and would gently touch his skin to keep him awake. It was our doctor's advice and it seemed to work. He's 10 now and I wish he slept more and ate less!

OP here. The doctor said to aim for 1.5-2 ounces every 2 hours and 2-3 ounces every 3 hours.

Hi OP, I don’t have any brilliant advice but just wanted to send you some love!! Good luck and congratulations.

Change the diaper before the feed. Strip them down a bit, less cozy blankets etc. Tickle their feet.

But if infants want to sleep, they will.

I would let him for for 3 hours. Then wake him up for a diaper change. Use an unwarmed wipe. Make sure the lights are on. Don’t re-swaddle him until the feeding is finished. I’m assuming your not breastfeeding since you know exactly how much food he’s getting. In this case, while feeding...sit him up on your knee, away from your body. When you feed him cuddled up, warm and cozy next to you, he’s gonna fall asleep.

Also, if he stops eating during a feed, sit him up and burp him. Some babies won’t eat if they need to burp.

OP here. I’m breastfeeding but the doctor said to pump and bottle feed. He also wants us to supplement with formula.
