UCSD chances?

What stays does a DS need to get into UCSD? 98% SAT and 4.0+ from public school. Is this within reach?

From what I can see from Naviance they like East Coast folks! I think your child has a good chance. Good luck.

Neighbor's kid had less than that stats wise a year ago and got a spot. He applied EA and is full pay. But it is one of the less expensive so it was win win all round.

UCs do not have EA. UCSD out of state cost of attendance is 62k/yr, a little less than some of the other UCs and privates.

I believe all of the U.C.s have dropped percentage of OOS to only 10% due to complaints from resident Californians, so much more difficult now

Not exactly:

“In May, the UC regents adopted a compromise policy that will freeze undergraduate enrollment of non-Californians at the Berkeley, San Diego, Los Angeles and Irvine campuses, where the percentages of non-Californians range from 24.4 percent to 18.9 percent; those schools will not be allowed to increase beyond the levels of the 2017-18 school year. The other five campuses, where the share ranges from 14.7 percent at Davis to less than 1 percent at Merced, will be allowed to grow that enrollment to 18 percent.”

That article is from 2017. I may be wrong but a UC Regent told me that at least UCLA and Berkeley were being limited to 10% OOS, but I don't know if that applies to UCSD and/or when.

OP, just apply!

I'm not sure my in-state DD will get in, because the UCs need the OOS kids to bankroll their in-state kids, whose tuition is held artificially low.

If your kid is interested in science or medicine, I think it's worth the OOS tuition. (and I don't know about the other strengths; just know about the sciences)

It looks like they considered a 10% cap in 2019 but didn't ratify it. Nothing else comes up in a news scan on the topic.

OP here. Thanks for your answers. DS is interested in pre-med and is looking mainly at California. He just wants to leave the East Cpast I think!

Better to save that overpriced OOS UC tuition for med school. If a student is going to attend a public university, it might as well be at a public price.
