Summer service learning programs for 14 year old?

DD is 14-- finishing 8th grade now-- and we are looking for a good summer program for her. Ideally we'd like to find something where she will be challenged, gain new skills and a sense of competence, and do something that helps others as well. And, of course, have fun! Program could be in the US, or abroad. Anyone have any suggestions? I found a ton of interesting-sounding programs by googling, but it's hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. thanks!

look at Overland programs. Very well run organization and great experience for my child last summer (she was a rising 11th grader but they have programs for different ages).
