Any older moms out there?

Hi. I’m pregnant with our third after a FET. I have two significantly older children who I had when I was much younger. I’m now 41 and just want some feedback from any other “older moms”, especially if you have older children. I’m not concerned with the embryo health as it’s with a much younger egg but more what it’s like having a child post 40. Was the pregnancy harder? The newborn stage? Did anyone surprise you with their opinions about you having a child later in life? I’m a Pilates instructor and in great shape but I’m still nervous (and I understand how lucky I am and am not complaining - just trying to get some feedback as all my friends had their kids younger). Thank you.

| I'm a few years away from being 40 but I just had a baby earlier this year. My older kids are 15 & 17. I was out (still am) of shape, weighed a lot more than I did when I had my first. My body ached so much, especially in the pelvic area and back during this last pregnancy. It was really difficult to walk. I just really felt my age and weight. I was very nervous about how it was going to be with a newborn. This baby was very colicky for the first 6 weeks which I didn't experience before. This was very overwhelming for me. My recovery has taken longer. I have incontinence and am doing pelvic floor physical therapy. Weight is coming off VERY SLOW. I thought I wouldn't have the energy for my baby but I actually do and that surprised me. I feel like I have the same energy that I did when I was younger. I'm up and about more than I was before this year. I didn't know many women that had kids as young as I did but I know a lot of women now having their first kid in their mid to late 30s. |

I just had my second DD at 41, a surprise pregnancy after years of infertility and needing IVF to conceive first DD at 36. Granted, I was AMA with my first child, too, but there was absolutely no difference in the two pregnancies (despite all the online fear-mongering I saw about pregnancy over 40). If anything, my blood pressure this time around was much better at the end than with my first. Delivery with #2 was easier than #1 (both were inductions), and my recovery this time was much faster, as well. None of my providers treated me like some delicate unicorn, either. AMA is very normal here these days.
I feel a little old compared to friends from back home. I grew up in a small town kind of area; most of them have high school and college-age kids now. But I fit in just fine with local friends and other people around here. Congrats, OP! |

| I'm 37 and obese. I'm currently 36 weeks pregnant with my first, via IVF. Despite lots of warnings about how being old and fat could impact a pregnancy....it's been completely fine. Am I occasionally uncomfortable? Sure. But nothing that I can't handle. How delivery goes....we'll see. But healthy/uneventful AMA pregnancies are certainly possible. |

| I had my first and only live birth at 41. Easy pregnancy, felt great. Age is just a number. You might have it rough but age isn’t going to be the reason alone. |

43 old mom ( second baby, also pgs tested embryo from younger age ). I would say get a pelvic floor PT check in just in case. Being a Pilates instructor you might already be very mindful of kegels, pressure and so on... It's the one difference I noticed with previous pregnancy, harder to bounce back. Newborn stage wasn't harder, I think it depends more on the kid than on the parent's age... I didn't find opinions surprising, I understood the higher risks ( at least on me ) and how friends would not have made the same choice.. they were also kind enough to not be explicit about their opinions even thought they had expressed it (regarding them) before my pregnancy.... |

I had my first a few weeks before my 44th birthday and my second was born when I was 49. Sometimes it is hard to keep up, but I am more active because of them. We are blessed!

| Tried for a 2nd between 41-45 and was unsuccessful. I barely have the energy to cart my only around to all his activities and I’m the oldest mom everywhere I go since I was 38 when I had my ds. I’m not in dc but suburbs. |
