Gas line bursts at D.C.'s Lafayette Elementary

A high-pressure natural gas line apparently burst with a loud bang Tuesday night outside an elementary school in upper Northwest Washington, sending gas streaming into the surrounding neighborhood.

There was no indication of any injury, damage to the school or to nearby houses.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at the Lafayette Elementary School on Broad Branch Road NW.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang, and told of smelling the gas in the streets surrounding the school.

Firefighters swarmed into the area and one fire official said it appeared that a leak had occurred at the gas meter outside the school. The cause of the leak was not immediately known.

The incident occurred as snow was falling in the area, but there was no indication whether the weather had played any part.
