Have been sleep training my 6 month old and I’d really like to cut the last feed. It’s always a different time every night but she does seem hungry when she wakes. I’m not sure whether from habit or true need, but the pediatrician says we can drop it if we’d like.
If you dropped the last feed cold turkey, what age was your baby? And did you wake up to pump? If so how long did you continue to do that? |
| I did it closer to a year with both and they were definitely ready. I sent dad in and it took two nights. If I cut it out that early I would have pumped before bed and perhaps once over night or very early. |
| I didn’t drop the night feed until after one year. I knew they were hungry and both kids went right back to sleep after they had a good nursing session. And they were hungry again in the morning. Right or wrong, I couldn’t let my babies cry from hunger and knew it was real hunger because as they got bigger, the wake up time got further and further from bedtime. Both dropped it on their own when they were ready. |

14 months with my oldest and around seven months with my youngest. They both dropped it on their own when they were ready.
Side note: I never saw the big deal in getting up once a night to nurse. Both my kids went right back to sleep and so did I. If I had to go downstairs and warm a bottle I might feel differently but nursing made it so easy. |

OP here and I appreciate the responses thus far.
I should add that the main reason I’m hoping to drop the night feed is so she can start sharing a room with her toddler brother. The randomness of her night waking makes it impossible for me to know when to swoop in and dream feed her consistently ahead of her waking every night (usually between 1:30-4am). |
| About a year, but we never dropped the dream feed. He was hungry and I felt like I could handle once per night. |
| Not until 11 months, though I probably could have done it earlier. |
| 19 months. Not my choice—dd made it clear that I could quickly feed her and she’d sleep until 7:30/8am or we could start our day at 4am. I agreed to her terms. |
She doesn’t sound ready to drop the night feed. Work on her increased eating and schedule (daylight and naps) during the day. |
