Retirement Ready Asians Come in - Where would you retire to?

Anonymous
We are Asians and about to retire. Currently, in MD (MoCo) and with kids settling all over the country, we don't necessarily have to stay here. From tax, COL, and acceptance (2016 election really opened our eyes), where should we consider moving to? As big as this country is, I am realizing, we may not have too many choices. Thoughts? TIA.

Is there any place that it seems like one of your kids will stay? I see a lot of elderly parents moving to where at least one kid lives.

My favorite game is "where *can* we retire"? I need different kinds of Asian foods, and diversity (which usually means diverse Asian food). Decent weather.

I've been thinking of Reno; just looked at Wimington, DE area online. I don't want to go south. Not sure where else to look.

+1. If you can afford it, how about Hawaii or California?

Retirement ready Asian here...I am retiring in place at my little neighborhood in upcounty, MoCo. I have lots of neighbors who have downgraded from Bethesda and moved in here. I have a community here and my kids are still in the process of moving around for their education and jobs.

BUT...Do you think that the place you pick to retire is where you will end up in the years that you live after retirement? My parents have moved several times - sickenss, death, changed circumstances...

We have no idea when and where our circumstances change. People in California have lost their homes in the fire, sea levels are raising and people who buy homes in beach towns are foolish, racial violence is happening everywhere and the first of many devastating pandemics is raging. Boy, we have not yet have had to deal with MERS or Ebola or Anthrax where the mortality rate is 50%!!

You do not know if you or your families health and fortunes will remain the same. Look at Trump. With all the precautions and excellent care he was taking, someone infected him (probably an asymptomatic millennial advisor who has in the past been promiscuous in her associations with coworkers? Who knows.) So nothing is a given. How do you know you will be safe anywhere?

Yes. Hawaii is beautiful, though, and many Asian-Americans live there

I’d encourage you to wait until you have grandkids. You might want to be near them. My parent moved and then 2 years later they wanted to live near dh and I in dc. Financially it wasn’t the best decision to sell and move again but they love being near us and our kids.

Don’t move to Hawaii. It’s nice for a year or two but medical care isn’t the best and it’s too far and expensive for kids to visit too often and vice versa unless they are on the west coast.

Lots of Asians in Texas especially Houston. No snow, fresh good diverse food. Lots of different kinds of communities. Downside is high property tax because there’s no income tax.

Hawaii is too far IMHO.

Few people will be able to afford to visit you often.

And how are you with LONG plane rides?

.. and the humidity. I can't stand the humidity. One of the reasons I want to move away from the DC area is because of the humidity.

Wait- what precautions and excellent care was he taking? He rarely wore a mask and was frequently in rooms of unmasked people, most of whom weren’t millenial? Maybe you should move to the Villages in FL- it sounds like you would fit in there.
