Multiple Offers -- Spots Opening Up

Anonymous
Just an idea, can people who have multiple offers and know which school they are going to go to identify which schools they are likely to turn down and what grade? That way, maybe people can have an idea about how many slots might open up from the waitlist. I would go first but we didn't get in anywhere.

i find no point in this except to add to the anxiety. i mean what - if a spot opens up, we all get our hopes up. i have come to peace with the fact that we will not get in our number one choice b/c everyone i know is on that list. i am not giving up but just keeping a perspective. i will assume we are not in unless i hear otherwise. i think you will drive yourself nuts playing this keeping track game. in fact i have a friend who got in to our number one school and they are not going (no, i am not telling you which school). anyway, point being, our children are the same age and same sex, so wouldn't it be great if we got their child's spot? of course, but i know it doesn't work that way, so whatever....

Interesting idea. But with no way to verify accuracy of posts, let alone numbers of applicants not on DCUM, might space listings give either false hopes ("I saw 10 spots, time to call the school") or further discouragement ("There aren't any spots, I'll go with plan B")?

I'm new to this, but it's not like you could call the school and say, "I saw five slots open on DCUM, so can I have one?". Right? Or am I naive? (Highly likely.)

As PPs have mentioned, notifying schools ASAP with our decisions will go a long way to alleviating everyone's stress (schools and families) and let us all focus on what's important - our kids.

From many posts, it looks like those families who got split decisions on siblings could really use quick openings. (I STILL can't believe schools will split siblings up for no discernable reason. )

Fingers crossed for everyone.

OP here. I agree that this isn't a very accurate measure, and that it appears that some schools have very large waitlists. I also agree that if people would notify schools ASAP with their decisions, that might help alleviate this problem. I guess I haven't given up hope of coming off the waitlist, especially at our number one school.

OP again. I should add that I thought of this subject based on Pollyanna's posts about her DC getting into six schools (which obviously means she turned down five schools). I'm not convinced that her situation is so unique, and that there are probably a number of kids whose skills and life experiences are so unique that they got into multiple schools (but maybe that's the subject of a different topic). Not every school's waitlist is long.

LOL You just made my day! I thought those "I don't know what to do I've got SOOOOO many offers" posts were BS.

PP, why do you think they're BS? Perhaps in poor taste to brag about having so many offers, but that doesn't mean that it can't be true.

PPer here- sorry, it was meant as a joke. Just letting off steam. Multiple offers are fabulous and I'm geniunely happy for kids who end up in places where they are happy.

Getting into college and grad school for me was a heck of a lot easier than pre-k here in DC!
