potty training

I am not sure if I am just looking for encouragement or what. More or less we're following the "oh crap" method, DD is 22M, and we are on day 5 of being commando at home.

She is doing great at pooping and peeing in the potty multiple times a day, and even will prompt us (starts saying "potty potty!" when she needs to go) but she never just walks over herself. She just tells us "potty potty!" or if we aren't fast enough she has an accident and just goes "uh oh!" (she knows poop and pee belong in the potty)

She seems to be connecting it, and we are having several successes a day, but also a few accidents a day - and as above mentioned - she knows she needs to go, but won't walk over on her own if we are otherwise occupied. In the 30s she was alone just now - she pooped multiple times around the living room!

There is also a lot of false starts - she says "potty potty!" and it's just a toot, or she sits for a while while we read a book and nothing comes out and after a few books she declares "done!"

advice? I am thinking we'll just stay the course ... but need some reassurance that she's getting it! She is doing so well! but being on day 5 ... I guess I was surprised and a little disheartened that she just pooped everywhere when alone for just 30s

I think you are doing great. She gets it, she still needs help (I mean, she's 1 -- of course she does) and lots of practice. I think just keep at it.

My DD responded to the Oh Crap method by simply holding in all pees and poops as long as possible. She could hold on to them until nap time or bedtime, and then we'd have to put a diaper on her so she could go to sleep, and she'd immediately fill it. She just had a fear of going on the potty and that method actually set us back a lot because it only made her more fearful/reluctant to potty train. We wound up being those people whose kid took over a year to finish potty training and everyone gives the side eye to. Potty training is HARD.

It sounds like it's working for you though with a normal number of difficulties along the way. I know it's hard! The combo of cleaning up accidents and making sure you are providing the right messaging/encouragement to your kid is really challenging and it's hard to keep it up for so many consecutive days. I get it! But keep going, I think you are really close and if you can make it through this coming weekend, I think you'll see it start to click. You've got this!

That sounds exactly right for that age, keep up the good work! It will probably take a month or two for her to consistently self-initiate. But the fact that she is telling you already means that she's making the connections and learning. If I were to guess, I'd say you'll be pretty much done with accidents in another week or so as she learns to give you more warning and hold it longer, but you'll need to help her to the potty for a month or two. But absolutely don't give up, she's doing perfectly and soon you'll be DONE!

Sounds like you are both doing great!

Op here, thanks PP! I am so proud of her, but as a FTM my confidence in the process started slipping today ... hopefully after the weekend we can start doing some real walks again (we have only been doing short walks around the block for the last 5 days, to keep close to the potty)

You can bring the portable with you - show her, put it in the bag, and go.

Keep going! The first five days was exhausting but DS, at 22 months, was fully potty trained. It’s such a joy to have it behind us.

Op, prompt her to go to the toilet. Sitting on the toilet for prolonged periods can cause constipation.

Meant to say prompt her on a schedule.
