Laundry smells funny

More laundry savy folks, please help. We are temporarily living in a rental apartment building that has top loading washing machines in the laundry room. Ever since we moved in, things like towels have smelled funny. Not like mold, but funky, like fish oil or something. When the towels are dry they are fine, but when they get wet the funky smell comes back. I've checked the washers for mold and they look clean. The wash also looks a bit dingier, we used to have a front loader that really did a great job. I've tried oxy clean and disolving the detergent completely before adding the clothes. Bleach got the towels a bit whiter but when the bleach smell dissapated, the funk was back. Dish towels and the kid's cloth bibs also have the bad smell. I've switched to washing on hot which has only helped marginally. Any ideas? Things I can add? I hate wrapping my head in the towels! TIA.

You are sure it's not mildew? You might try drying smaller loads and really drying them well.

Otherwise I don't know. Horse blankets can do a number on a washer but that's highly unlikely in an apartment! But in either case, maybe there is some oily substance in there. Perhaps running an empty load with some bleach or vinegar (not both together!) and letting it soak in there for several hours might exorcise the demonic smell.

It's so weird, we put stuff in the dryer right away and when it comes out of the dryer it seems ok, but then when things get wet again they stink. I might run a jug of vinegar through 1 washer and always try to use that one if it helps. Ah, the joys of communal living. I wonder about the water heater that is used for the washers, the building has plenty of hot water but the warm setting for the washers is only tepid.

This is problem reported by many people with fromt loading washers. I have not heard about with top loaders.

Throw a cup of baking soda with every load. My parents used to be on well water and their towels smelled funky too until my mom started using the baking soda. You can get huge bags of it at Costco, Target, etc.

There may be a problem with mold/mildew in a part of the machine that you can't see. . .
