We have a basketball in front of her house(quiet street) and a few neighbors have been using it on what I assume if their breaks from school. The only problem is, that I am a teacher, so loud bouncing can be heard during my lessons.
I really hate to tell the kids they can’t, because it’s great they are out playing and getting exercise, but my office window faces the street and it is really loud. I could try and set up times that it’s okay but, even then sometimes I’m in meetings or 1:1. DH suggested saying they will have to wait till after school, I just feel like a jerk. Plus, I’m not sure I can really enforce it, I can’t leave my lessons to go ask them to leave? |
Don't ask, just tell them to go away because your class is in session. Too soft. |
|
I would tell them it can't be used until after school, assuming it's on your property. You're being a good neighbor by letting them use it in general.
Now, if you just happen to live near a basketball court but it doesn't belong to you, that's your tough luck. |
| You could get a noise cancelling headset if it’s not on your property/someone decides to buy their own and the Josie still can be heard. |

Is the hoop on the street or on your driveway?
I know people who put it on the street - which makes it public use. So you can not dictate when people use it. If it is on your property - you can set guidelines. |
| It's YOUR basketball net. Why are they even allowed on your property at all without express permission? |
| Get off my yard-welcome to old grumpy neighbor age |
| Plese clarify if this is on your properly. That makes a difference. |
| ^ *property. |
| What’s a basketball goal? You mean a hoop? |
| Dear lord, they can wait until school is over to borrow your basketball hoop. Boundaries, people! |
|
Jesus. Yes, you are a jerk. Is there seriously NO noise in your home? Get some noise canceling headphones or close the windows.
People complain about DL, kids being isolated. Then they try to get out of the house and people still complain. |

Is it YOUR hoop?
Is it on YOUR property? If the answer is "no" to either then it's no different than any other neighborhood ambient noise (lawn mowers, barking dogs, neighbors listening to music outside, etc). |
| My impression is that OP set it up on the street right next to their curb. OP, I think you can ask but you can’t enforce it. All you could do is kindly suggest that if it continues to be a noise issue, you’ll have to take it down. |
NP here, I am a teacher, and I'm confused. How do noise canceling headphones keep my class from hearing noise? I think that the request that people not come on my property to do loud things when class is in session is reasonable. |
