I have a friend who is moving to Maryland, and considering Bowie. Her major concern is the schools. She has one in K and one in 2nd.
The 2nd grader has been identified as gifted in her current district. How hard is it to get into the GT or Montessori magnets in PGCPS? Both from an academic qualification perspective and from a luck-of-the-draw perspective. Any other advice for school-related info in Bowie, short of going private in Anne Arundel or something? It's such an awesome area as far as amenities and housing prices and commute to DC - schools are what's holding her back. |

Almost all kids who apply for the G&T programs in Bowie get slots. The exception is maybe entrance into 4th and 5th grades. The TAG middle school program was expanded a few years ago so even kids who don’t go to TAG ES magnets have a very good chance of getting spots..
For the last 3 or 4 years applications for most TAG schools were reopened in Aug because they had made it through the waitlist. |
Here is the list of TAG schools and what grades still had slots as of mid-Aug. Grades 2-8 TAG Program schools listed below by grade level (students must be TAG identified to participate): 2nd grade locations - Capitol Heights, Glenarden Woods, Heather Hills, Longfields, Mattaponi and Valley View Elementary Schools 3rd grade locations - Capitol Heights, Heather Hills, Longfields, Mattaponi, and Valley View Elementary Schools 4th grade locations - Longfields, Mattaponi, and Valley View Elementary Schools 5th grade locations - Capitol Heights, Longfields ES and Mattaponi Elementary Schools 6th grade locations - Accokeek Academy, Kenmoor and Walker Mill Middle Schools 7th grade locations - Walker Mill Middle School 8th grade locations - Kenmoor and Walker Mill Middle Schools |
