Montgomery County Trash Collection

Anonymous
Anyone know what is going on with trash collection. I know service on Monday was canceled but I cannot find any update on the County website. Our normal collection day is Tuesday. Am I to assume our collection date is now Wednesday?

Ours is tomorrow as well. Since I see no cancellation on the MoCo website, I'm assuming pickup.

I heard that everything is a day behind.

Montgomery County Division of Solid Waste Services
*** February 7, 2010 - Collection Status Announcement ***
Whew! What a snow storm! We have canceled Montgomery County-provided recycling and trash collections for tomorrow, Monday, February 8, 2010. All pickups this week will slide by one day.

We will reassess the road condition situation on Tuesday morning, and send you status updates as needed. What goes into our collection status decision when winter weather hits? The process begins at 4 am... read more on our blog.

If your normal collection day is: Your collection day for the week of February 8, 2010, is:
Monday Tuesday
Tuesday Wednesday
Wednesday Thursday
Thursday Friday
Friday Saturday

If you have any questions or concerns about your County-provided collection, please contact our Customer Service staff online or call 240-777-6410. If you (or your community) have a private contract for your trash collection, these schedule announcements may not apply to your trash service -- check with your hauler or community manager.

Tip from Montgomery County's Fire and Rescue Service: Please make sure you keep your local fire hydrant clear of any snow so that our people can readily see them and use them in case of fire. Help us to help you if need be!

Ugh. Earlier today the message was different. And incomplete to boot. So I figured the last message about bumping all pickups by a day was still in force. Now I've got 5 bags of stuff from my fridge and freezer piled up for another week (we were out of power for more than 48 hours and I don't need anyone getting food poisoning at this stage.) I understand the difficulties but wish the County could have put out consistent information on this.

If you are home, it might not be too late. I don't know for sure, but when this type of thing happens, they often pick up much later than usual.

You should subscribe to the Solid Waste Division's collection email. It comes out when there may or may not be a scheduling change in pickup - i.e. on Monday holidays. Some holidays are skip holidays, but others, like Presidents Day, are not. The "trash lady" Susanne Wiggins, who writes the emails, manages to make trash lighthearted, believe it or not!

The email told us today that there was trash pickup, but no recycling pickup.

I'm the PP who complained earlier. I checked the website at 5am and 6am (up early with small kids.) I'm glad the email was more accurate, but the county should foresee that most people will get their info from the news or from the website, none of which had the latest info.

BUT to be fair, I saw a truck on a nearby street and flagged one of the guys down. They said they'd come by my house but after an hour I gave up and pulled the trash can back away from the street. A few minutes later I saw the truck pull over, and dropped the baby to run out - but they had already gone all the way up my driveway (not a long one but still!) and emptied my giant bin overflowing with all the contents of my fridge and freezer. I am SOO grateful to the guys who work the trash truck today, and to all the cashiers at my neighborhood grocery store... between them all they should get a Congressional medal for dealing with all us hysterical snowbound families

That's good to know! I work for the County, but not for Solid Waste, so I'm not super-familiar with their practices/notifications/etc. I must say though, that the actual guys who pick up trash and recycling are super-professional. Much better than most places I've lived.
