MCPS school board— who to vote for?

Anonymous
Curious who folks are supporting, particularly the district races. I was disappointed I the outcome of the primary At Large race but think I’m voting for Sunil (definitely don’t want Lynne).

Who for District 2: Michael or Rebecca and why?

Who for District 4: Sherba or Steve and why?

Out of curiosity, why not Harris? I'm not thrilled with either option for the at-large seat and really don't know who is the least bad.

District 2 Rebecca as she has handled reopening and boundary analysis reasonably. District 4 Steve as he has reasonable positions to safely reopen, minimize redistricting and reform rather than remove police from schools.

Definitely Not Harris

Sunil because I don’t want Lynne.

rebecca. She is the only current board member I would vote for.

Steve. Because i won’t vote for the current board president.

I know next to nothing about Harris, but Sunil seems crazy. Why is Sunil the less-bad choice?

High schoolers are doing so much better with a 9am start time.

Vote for anyone who is willing to switch elementary kids and high school kids' schedule. Some high school practices can be scheduled in the morning, if afternoon is an issue.

Rebecca Smondrowski and Shebra Evans are the incumbents. I'm not voting for either of them.

MCPS doesn't have a reopening plan, nor metrics for reopening. Nearly every other county in MD has published such a plan.

I'm not saying they need to reopen, but they should have a plan for how/when to do so. I've watched BOE meetings and the BOE members have not pushed for this at all.

It's not just sports - it is also after school jobs and childcare. A lot of HS-aged kids are the primary source of after school care for younger siblings. This came up during the study a few years ago, and leaving the little kids with no childcare was deemed (correct, I think) unacceptable.

Tell me who to vote for if I’m upset that they didn’t try harder to have kinder on campus even hybrid and would be livid if next fall isn’t five days a week for all elementary. Totally fine with masks. Like it would have been totally fine. Just like my younger daughters’ preschool for the last five months.

The lack of a plan or any concrete effort is infuriating. Be honest with parents so we can plan. I ended up holding my kid back from virtual kinder at the last second. We would have been fine with hybrid or hybrid phase in and were totally caught off guard and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

While that's understandable frustration, make sure the other candidates aren't even worse before deciding to vote for them. That's more obvious in the Lynne vs Sunil case, where Sunil doesn't even seem to want to make progress towards reopening.
