Freezing travelling husband's sperm for IUI - possible?

Anonymous
My husband needs to travel extensively the next few months. Can we freeze his sperm? Any risks?

i have heard you can do this. at least dr. abbasi at CFA and dr. durso told me this. i haven't had to do it, but the doctors said that you will lose sperm count while thawing.

does your husband have MFI?

Yes, SG offered to do this for me. We ended up not needing to b/c my husband's travel dates worked out and he was in town when I needed him.

Fresh samples are always better than frozen, but they can work with frozen too. I have heard that the main issue is that freezing shortens the sperm lifespan, so while sperm from a fresh sample can live about 72 hrs after the insemination, the frozens might only live 24 hrs or so. It makes it more crucial that your timing for the IUI is perfect. But if you're using a trigger, your timing should be accurate anyway.

I think it is possible- be ready though, people might make some unwelcome comments.

I know someone who did this and other people said, "wasn't her husband out of town for several months at that time?" (Of course these people didn't know I've done IVF too (different procedure), and they should really shut the hell up. I said it a little nicer in person.)
