1) Denial: "There's no way they actually do a lottery."
2) Anger: "I can't believe they're doing a lottery! What is Brabrand thinking?" 3) Bargaining: "Maybe they can set aside some lots for the truly exceptional kids, like mine..." 4) Depression: "This is crap. I don't want to even send my kid to TJ anymore. It's gonna be ruined." 5) Acceptance: "Well....I can't get the labs anywhere else." |
Do you think the new system will make you feel good about your kid? You can justify to your self now that he/she is not getting to TJ is due to the luck, and not the lack of intelligent, which seems genetic. |
So your kid cannot get on merit. Congrats! They now have a chance. |
DP. Your grammar is atrocious. If it's the same as your 'intelligent, which seems genetic', your kid doesn't stand a chance, either. |
English is my second language, and my kid is already in. |
| When they shut down TJ will they let current Freshman graduate or will current students be forced to finish HS somewhere else? |
+1 |
Hely crap, let's also pretend that no Fields Medalist has ever mis-added two numbers. Petty. It's a lot more likely that PP is a non-native speaker, which isn't a sign of lack of intelligence, whatever some bigots might want us to believe. |
“I get it. They could and so they did. ~ It is not the end of the world~” OP - your framework works in rationalizing any sort of egregious overreach of political power. But thank you |
OP. Clever! Just an observation that I made. But yes, Moscow Mitch can go jump off a cliff. |
Oh no! The horrors of having to attend Oakton! Of course they are going to let current students finish at TJ. The lottery will be phased in with new classes. |
| I don't care much of anything about TJ. Never desired to send my kids there, although they are gifted (like their parents). However, this lottery process will definitely destroy that school. You're going from gifted kids (albeit apparently some cheaters) to any poor s.o.b. that managed a 3.5 gpa and algebra I (40% of the country's 8th graders). Good luck with that! |
Just like they didn't let just anyone with a 3.0 GPA and Alg 1 into the semifinalist pool previously, they're not going to let just anyone with a 3.5 and Alg 1 into the lottery. Promise you that. |
| 5) Fight: Start by going out and vote in November. |
Vote for what, precisely? Conservative jurists will support structures like this because they're the foundation for charter schools and therefore their education platform of "school choice". They'll say something about "merit" because they want to appease rich people, but in the end, they like charter schools and as such will not rule lotteries as unconstitutional. If you're looking to vote for new school board members, you'll have to wait for 2022. |
