Any tie between Romani and Romanian people?

Anonymous
I'm sure this is a stupid question that some nice person with a degree in history could answer for me but I've always wondered this and never known. Is there any historical connection between Romani people (gypsies) and the people of Romania or is the similar naming just coincidence (presumably related to the Roman Empire)?

Coincidence. The Romani people come from India originally.

No, just a name coincidence. Gypsies originated from northern India, while Romanians are a mix between the indigenous population and the Roman colonists. The Romanian language is the closest language to the original Latin, while gypsies speak a dialect of Domari. Gypsies are found all over Europe and not exclusively in Romania. The largest concentrations of gypsies are in Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Macedonia.
Gypsies came to Europe around 1500 years ago, while Romans conquered the indigenous population in 101 AD, creating the population currently known as Romanians.

The Gypsies have a fascinating and unique culture and history for sure.

Yep. Kind of morbid, but because they were mostly a nomad population, they used to kidnapped young children from the villages, to alleviate the inbreeding. It was a common event when my mom grew up in the country, in the 1940s, thankfully not anymore.

Truly a bunch of thieves, especially here in the US.
