Is it safe to swim in lake anna

The water temperature is much higher due to cooling down the nuclear power plant. I don’t know how I feel about this. I guess I don’t feel comfortable, which is why I am asking.

friends of ours had a house there and the dad was a nuclear scientist. He swam in it. they would go "hot tubbing" which meant they would take their boat near the power plant and float around in blow ups where the water was really hot.

It’s fine. The water north Anna discharges is not radioactive at all. I’m too tired to explain it. But the incidence of brain eating amoeba is higher bc of the warmer temperatures.

My husband doesn’t like it there for the same reason you’re concerned.

I went there for the day recently & I went in the water but purposely didn’t put my head under.

So, no.

I swim m in Lake Anna every summer and have done since the 1980s. I can easily count on one hand the 6 or 7 incidents we have had due to the nuclear plant.

Incidents???? From a nuclear power plant? One is more than enough.

As for amoeba, it’s a real risk of any lake that doesn’t deep freeze like the kettle lakes.

Guess NP grew an extra finger or two due to the incidents!

There is a warmer side and a cooler side. But even the cooler side gets really hot in July... like bath water if you’re in a cove. It’s still fun to do water sports out on the open lake at that time but floating in a tube near a house is gross. I definitely got worried about amoeba and bacteria last time I was there. It was seriously 90 degrees in the cove near my friend’s house.

We are at lake Anna now. The air temperature is 60s and 70s but the water near the nuclear power plant is high 80s. We came to lake Anna previously in the middle of July where it was both hot in and out of the water. It feels much different when only the water is warm since I know it is hot because of the nuclear power plant.

How many brain eating amoeba incidents have happened there?

I'm a nuclear engineer and I have and would continue swim in Lake Anna. The level of radioactivity in the water is... nothing. Even in an incident, levels would be so low. Learn a bit about background levels.

You're at significantly higher risk while driving to Lake Anna than swimming there.

Do you mean radioactivity in the surrounding areas vs inside the water?

Sorry, this is not giving me more comfort.
