Damascus?

Can someone tell me about Damascus? (someone who lives there, or who did live there). It's getting more diverse, which is what I want. I've seen both Biden and Trump signs up there. Does that mean there is a bit of a mix of thought? I just want a bit more of a laid back lifestyle than what I have now in the Rockville/Wootton cluster.

It’s still very conservative, very white, very working class, and very sports-focused.

Olney/Brookeville would be more of a middle ground between your Wooton and Damascus.

I live here and this just isn't true at all. There's mostly white and black, less asain. I'll give you that. But it's absolutely not all white and only those over 50 or so are conservative. It sounds like you don't know what you're talking about, honestly.

The only thing I'd caution against is the HS sports issues (student to student sexual abuse) over the last few years. It's extremely troubling. That is a difficult stigma to shake, though could happen anywhere. There aren't many good private schools nearby.

It's rapidly becoming more diverse, as people look for affordable housing. Move in now, and you'll see big changes in the next 5-10 years.

Parts of Clarksburg Village feeds into Damascus High school; and Clarksburg Village is very diverse. The demographics of the HS is definitely changing. If you're looking for an affordable and diverse community that feeds into that cluster, then I definitely recommend Clarksburg Village. The actual Damascus area is still fairly conservative and largely white though.

Google the article titled something like, "Montgomery County isn't as liberal as you think it is." It uses a handful of ballot initiatives to demonstrate which MoCo communities consistently vote conservative. Unsurprisingly, Damascus skews conservative.

My two cents: whenever we play teams from Damascus, we brace ourselves for poor sportsmanship and racist antics by both the kids and their white parents. It's something I've observed with my handful of boys who play multiple sports each season.

Damascus public schools are a no go.

Read up how they treat their students at the HS. The football program alone is horrific. And yes that was an MCPS fail as well.

Traffic on 27 stinks.

Lot's of new housing out that way.

I'd do Urbana over Damascus and that is not saying much.

I did not say recent, you did. And voting to end prohibition 7 years ago does not a progressive town make.

It is old incorporated town, so it has right to do so.
There is a recreation center, senior center, Macgruder trail, soccer field and swimming pool. Bus service is to Shady Grove only.
If you know where to look, you can buy a house without an HOA.
There is one housing hoa that got sued.

I grew up there and have plenty of acquaintances who are raising their kids there. The people I know are very involved in their kids sports, seem to live vicariously through the kids, and are “wine moms”. I remain happy with my decision to start my family down county.
