Here is one study of factors that led to crashes:

Thank you! |
| I was at an intersection I thought was a 4-way stop but wasn’t. When I drove forward, I got t-boned by a car doing 40mph. Totaled my car. |
|
I was driving southbound on the highway (probably around 75-80mph, far left lane on a giant Texas highway, so speed of traffic) and a car in the lane to my right changed lanes into me without checking his blindspot. I spun out across the median and then across all 5 lanes of north-bound traffic before landing in a ditch on the other side. The car that hit me bounced back into the middle of the southbound hwy, hit a different car, and spun around and followed me across all 5 lanes of northbound traffic to land about 35 yards away in the same ditch, facing the other way.
There was a 3-car pileup of cars on the northbound side trying to avoid hitting us, and an 18-wheeler intentionally (gently) jacknifed to stop traffic behind him to prevent a worse accident. Everyone walked away, which the Sherriff who responded to the wreck remarked upon 3 different times. "We get a lot of bad wrecks on this stretch, but normally someone would be decapitated with this many cars involved!" (What's the cop equivalent of bedside manner? His was not amazing.) Fun extra fact: my crappy little Honda Civic was totaled out from that wreck but served me well for another 4 years. As a college student, the check from the insurance company was welcome. |
| I was a passenger in a vehicle that was hit broadside in an intersection by a speeding drunk driver. The impact left an outward dent on my side and the driver side was pushed into the middle of the truck we were in. I wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Miraculously, the driver and I walked away with soft tissue damage only and I recovered in 2 weeks. The drunkard was fine, too. I have worn my seatbelt without fail since that night, 30 years ago. |
That sounds like a scary experience. Glad you and everyone else were fine! |
| Thanks for your posts. Hope you are doing well now. |
| About a year ago I took a 6-hour online defensive driving course from the National Safety Council and highly recommend it to anyone. People in the DC area drive aggressively and it is really important to stop and think that all it takes is one "mistake"--cutting someone off, a right on red without coming to a stop, speeding, checking the phone, etc. to change your life and someone else's life forever. Getting to your destination 1 minute faster is not worth the risk. |

Was a passenger in a car traveling on I-5 (the big North-South Highway on the west coast) just south of Portland. Left lane, at the speed limit. Began hydroplaning after hitting a slick spot. Slid across all 4 lanes on our side, hit the barrier, then rolled several times back into traffic before landing on the side in the middle of the far right lane.
Thankfully, no one hit us. We were all wearing seat belts. We were all okay. Car was, obviously, totaled. |
| I was driving to a daycare when a car flew over a grassy median and hit me head-on. I had a split second to hit the brakes but the impact still left me with a massive concussion. Other driver appeared to have a TBI from hitting the steering wheel to the point the police assumed they had a seizure so didn't drug test them or charge with reckless. Went through months of physical and vision therapy to get back to normal. |
| My car came to a sudden and unexpected stop. |
| I was 17 and driving my SUV. I was leaving a movie theater's parking lot and driving on the outer road part. Hit a patch of black ice. Lost control of the car and started heading towards a plowed pile of snow in the lot. Freaked out that I would hit this pile head on and over corrected the out of control car. Ended up going right through the wooden guardrail and into the woods. Managed to avoid any large trees before I got the car to stop. No airbags went off. Cut my forehead , broke my wrist, and sprained my ankle. The cops commented how insanely lucky I was that I didn't slam into one of the many trees that my car somehow avoided. |
| It was years ago when I was in college. Some tree branches had grown covering a stop sign. I saw it too late. I slammed on my breaks but ended up stopping in the middle of the intersection. I hit a larger car and it spun my tiny sedan into a truck. My car was totaled. The other car had some damage and the truck was fine. I was shaken up and had some bruising from the airbag but was otherwise fine. My insurance paid for everything, luckily. I was afraid to drive for a while after that and it was 10 years before I bought another car. |
