Ideal would be near a smaller city with easy access to parks, skiing, hiking, etc. Prefer cooler climates. Towns with good schools a bonus, especially those that emphasize outdoor education.

Norwich, VT, right across the river from Hanover, NH where Dartmouth is. Walk to outdoorsy stuff, lots of educated and cultured people from around the world, and more opportunities than most remote areas because of the university and the medical center.
