Can somebody share the details on how to join a magnet program?

There are a number of threads on this, if you search the archive. Basically, the magnets start at middle and high school (there are also a "highly gifted centers" starting at 4th grade). Admission is by test, which is administered in December the year before entrance. You find out in March or so.

If your child is currently attending an independent school, how do they take the test?
Also what are people's opinion on it.

You first register with your local MoCo public, so they have you in the system. This would be after you move, if you're planning a move. Then you download the magnet forms from the MoCo website for the school that you're interested in. The forms have essays, teacher recs, transcript requests. The test is given on the same day for all the magnets (as I recall), and the forms will tell you about it.

So in short, I guess I'd start with the MoCo website, going to the magnet info pages.

If you're planning a move, I think there may be special provisions for the testing, after you've moved. But I don't know for sure.
