Irrational Fear #39: flat roof collapsing?

Anonymous
I know, I know. But this snow is heavy...and I just moved here from a warmer climate. Reassure me that my flat, DC rowhouse roof (house built in 1963) won't cave in under the weight?

Our rubber membrane roof is leaking.

hop in there and shovel it...

Already done 3 times. . . .

When was the roof last replaced?

I'm a little worried, too, as my house was built in 1908 and the roof is not in the greatest shape. My only consolation is that this house is so poorly insulated that a lot of the snow might be melting!

OP here. I thought our roof was in good shape (just had Ketchmark installing skylights a couple weeks ago; I'm sure they would have mentioned had they seen an opportunity to replace a roof) but you know, if I can find something to stress about, I'll do it...endlessly. As long as most folks aren't freaking out, I try to scale it back. (Sorry to the folks with leaking, etc.).

I saw this on tv. Nobody was hurt, but the building (not just the roof) completely collapsed. They said "it looks like a tornado hit the church, judging by the way the structure looks".

Why don't you shovel it? We shoveled ours.

OP here. We'll shovel it tomorrow...we had a lot of shoveling today just with maintaining the path to the sidewalk, and the sidewalk in front of the house, driveway and car. DH went up to the roof, cleared the skylights, AC unit etc., but it was just like a 3 hour job and he aborted.

When we had a flat roof, it was very easy because we had a roof hatch from the back balcony. We just put a step ladder up to it and climbed up. I don't know how others do it.
