Full size or twin size mattress?

5 year old son’s bedroom is almost 50% bigger than 2 year old daughter’s room. DS has a full size bed mattress (We put it on floor), and it has rooms for a tall bookshelf, toy chest, train table, yoga exercise space, walk-in closet and a dresser. It is spacious for him. He sleeps everywhere on the mattress, and he jumps on mattress all the time for fun.

2 year old DD is sleeping in a convertible crib, but we decide to get her a bed mattress ( put it on floor). DH wants to get a full size mattress ( take up 50% of the room), but I want to get a twin size mattress ( because of space issue). Her room has a small built in closet. DH says that we should be fair to both kids, and get the same size for comfort & fun ( she loves to jump on his brother mattress all the time).

We paid almost $1k for DS mattress ( whole set), so we will get a decent priced one for DD that can lasts for years. Should we get full size or twin size? I am curious what furnitures normally takes up space in a girl bedroom (elementary or middle )?

Get a twin given the small room. She won’t care if she gets to be involved with picking other things out. My son has two twins in his room and my daughter has two full size given her younger sister will be moving in sometime soon. He wanted his room to be a dark dungeon and she wanted a princess room. Neither cared about the bed size.

You could get her a twin size with a trundle

Both my girls have a twin mattress. They love the extra space in their rooms. They are 12 and 9 and have no complaints.

Get a twin for the small room and every two years they switch rooms.

Our 2 kids each have a room like yours, one small and and one much larger. We got both kids same size mattress based on the small room space. Maybe you can talk with husband to get 1 twin mattress you want or 2 twin to be fair and leave the full mattress for further use or guest bed or donate etc if husband demands on fairness. Kids will grow up to appreciate to have more room space to use.

It depends on how she uses the room. If she actually hangs out and plays there then get the twin.

If she is mainly just sleeping, just go ahead and get the full because it will last her until she is out of the house.

I would lean towards the twin if the full would look out of place and significantly inhibit functionality of the room. I was always happier in at least a full, though.

Definitely twin

This is op. Thanks, seems like twin size makes more sense. If space won’t be an issue in the future, we plan to stay at current house for many years because I hate moving.

Everything will never be fair between the two kids. He got the bigger room because he got there first. You will probably spend more money on her for clothes and hair than you do on her brother. Her brother may need expensive tutoring and/or a private school. She may not need that. You give each child what you can and what THEY need at the time. When he goes to college she can get the big room. Do not encourage score keeping in your kids. They will end up miserly, competitive and dissatisfied. I vote for the twin with the trundle. Plus them she can jump up AND down.

Oh my gosh. DH is wrong. Twin with trundle or bunk for sleepovers all the way. I had a bigger bed in a smaller room and it wasn’t great. Not enough floor space to play. The fair thing is to try to get them the same amount of floor space. If he doesn’t agree, please show him the thread.

Get a cheap twin at Costco, Sams Club or where ever and then upgrade later. We did that and upgraded around age 8.

Yikes, her room will be like Green Acres. That's no fun!

Two twins on top of each other or one of those stackable couch things! That way she can unfold it for jumping and gold back for other stuff.

Or you can just let her jump on her brother's mattress at designated times.

We have a full in a small room and its fine. We have a dresser, nightstand and bookshelf. We don't store a lot of toys in the room.
