Any chance DCPS reopens in person for Term 2 or Term 3?

Anonymous
Is it wishful thinking to hope that DCPS will reopen (at least hybrid) in person for the next term or in Term 3? I understand that doing it this year after November 9 may just be too hard with the holidays, but what about 2021 in January ? This is simply unsustainable for many, including working parents. What are the metrics for DCPS to open? I am unfortunately jealous of my friends in NE states that are reopening (and we are taking precautions seriously).

I can’t imagine how they can reopen just as cold and flu season will be beginning and weather getting colder, but I also can’t give up hope. Just have no idea how we will make it through this year. It’s not sustainable and yet we have to sustain an impossible situation.

I think Jan 2021 could happen but it depends on virus levels and if a vaccine is being rolled out.

I'm a teacher and I'm thinking they'll open in hybrid, by January, if not before. The covid data is looking quite good and it's going in the right direction. We will see how other places fare, like NYC.

Although flu season is nearly upon us I'm thinking that it will hardly be present. Because of all the Covid precautions. How will regular flu spread if just about everyone is wearing a mask, not in school, washing hands, keeping distance, etc? Not so many chances to spread, like usual times. Remember, kids in school spread flu the most.

A scientist said the very same thing a couple weeks ago.

So maybe we'll open after the end of the year holidays?

Schools should be open now. We meet all the health requirements.

I think they will start bringing back self-contained SPED pretty soon, and gradually reopen to others in early January.

It all comes down to staffing.
The schools need twice the staff to do hybrid.

You have teachers in the classroom with 50% of the cohort at at time.
Who is then teaching the 50% of the kids who are home during that time?
Are they just doing homework?
You can't just livestream the in-person cohort because they're learning the same material that was taught to the previous 50% in person earlier in the week.

Plus you WILL lose some of teacher workforce when you go hybrid. It's just a given that some percentage will quit or take a leave of absence due to being high risk.
So than you are down teachers from your baseline.

Fairfax county was all set to offer hybrid but tossed the entire thing NOT BECAUSE OF THE VIRUS BUT BECAUSE OF STAFFING.

We're all bored with you. We know you aren't happy. You've posted all over DCUM. You hate teachers. You blame leftist pigs. We get it. Please stop.

The November 9th reopening date never made sense to me. It’s just not feasible to jump from virtual learning on 11/6 to in-person learning on 11/9. Teachers will need time to put their classrooms together, get the school ready, and of course adjust plans for in-person learning. I’m certain this will require additional planning days being added to the calendar which will just push us closer to the holidays!

I’m thinking January at the earliest.

NP: I’m sure there are a lot of people who share PP’s opinion. It’s a lame response to try to pretend like it’s one person.

They can use Wednesday in October to get the classroom ready

Going all-virtual at my kid’s school was very controversial.

Public schools in New England have started reopening as normal — kids going to school in person, five days a week. These are states with similar coronavirus caseloads as DC.

I don’t understand these people who think schools can never reopen.

I think a lot of it will depend on how it goes in states with low case counts, like in New England and NY. Also, if schools reopen, I’d like to see the see the mayor mandate that offices remain closed/remote, if possible. Since many are already working from home already.

This is not sustainable for us and we help at home. two working parents - my Kindergartner isn't going to learn to read at school. It's all BS.
