Purple toes

Has it happened to any of your kids? What do you do? Can they still play/wear cleats?

Done ice, elevation and warm Epsom salt.

Looks painful, some complain but haven't tried wearing cleats yet.

Its a symptom of covid also

Are they running around a lot in too-small shoes? I know that losing toenails and getting bruised toes is a common problem with runners when their shoes are too small.

Shoes too tight, foot could also be getting used to being a runners foot.

Or it’s COVID-AIDS.

Covid toes. It’s a thing. I’d look into it.

"Dermatologists around the world have noticed an increasing number of patients presenting with an unusual rash that may be related to COVID-19: red-purple, tender or itchy bumps that develop mostly on the toes, but also on the heels and fingers." - https://weillcornell.org/news/covid-toe-and-other-covid-19-skin-conditions

Get your child tested, then notify your club if your child is positive.

I could have sworn I started a "Covid Toes" Post a few weeks ago...Away, I had the same concerns. The tops of my son's toes on both feet were all red. It was ridiculous. However, he was playing ALOT. He'd train and then stay and play with friends for hours. Even though he had two pair of cleats and alternated, they never dried out. We called the pediatrician and had a Zoom call. We said we were worried because we heard of Covid toes. She said that Covid Toes look like frostbite. Almost black. You are saying purple. So I bought my kid two new pair of cleans a half size bigger than his current ones and the doctor told him to put hydrocortisone on his toes twice a day. We had him taker care of his feet better...put is cleats on right before practice and take them off immediately after including socks and put on slips. I had several people recommend higher quality cleats with good leather so the cleat stretches and leather breathes.

Yes. My kids get this all the time. My younger insists that he has to wear his boots tight because he has a better touch that way. As a result he frequently has black toenails which grow out and fall off once a year or so before he repeats the exercise. No treatment really necessary. If it's too painful to play give your DC a day or two off - and you might need to tape the nail to the toe to prevent it ripping off painfully if it starts to separate before it falls off.

My son has a few purple nails and I thought covid first too. Had him tested (for school, not the toes) and he was fine. It is just from bad fitting cleats.

Kids have been relatively (compared to normal) sedentary, sleeping in, and have had time for meals since spring- lots of growth spurts and ill fitting cleats (and uniforms)

Um Google Covid toes. This is a pretty common symptom. Please DO NOT let your kid near anyone besides your family.

OP here, had an app. with the pediatrician and he said NOT a covid symptom. However we got a referral to see a podiatrist.

He recommended to change cleats every season and avoid synthetic materials.

Just in case anyone actually believes this nonsense, covid toes was another hallucination that was popularized by our hysterical media back in April. Turns out it has nothing to do with covid - it was in fact caused by the usual things that cause chillblains, and the lockdown increased its indicence. https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200625/covid-toe-probably-not-caused-by-covid-19#1
