How is your middle schooler's attitude these days?

Mine just started 6th grade and does nothing but complain and whine the entire school day. He is currently sitting at his desk and instead of listening to the teacher he is saying "when will he stop talking" and is hitting his head on the desk repeatedly. If I am not constantly on him, he turns off the camera and does not pay attention at all. He does have ADD so I know it's harder but come on!!!!

It varies. During growth spurts the tude comes out. Just finished one and the tude is back in check.

That sounds really wrong. Do you or he have a therapist? I was going to talk about my tween but I think you have a problem here, OP. That behavior is not normal tween behavior.

My child has ADHD and her attitude is fine. But, she has always been a happy go lucky kid. She does need help to stay on track. We bought her a wobble chair that she likes and we are going to buy more gum to help with fidgeting. Maybe those would help a bit?

Mine is negative almost all the time. ADHD-inattentive, but truthfully he likes remote school better than in person school. He just hates school. He seems to hate everything that isn't tech/video game related. (He's in therapy. It helps a little.)

My guess is that he’s doing that because of his ADD. Maybe check in w/ special needs forum.

My DD (12) is coping well. Keeping up with assignments & staying engaged. She much prefers real school, but is trying to make the best of it.

Up and down, but mostly liking school and trying to do a good job. But apart from school we are in a bit of a rollercoaster and DC utters the phrase “I just want to die” a couple of times a week.

Mine is grumpy because he misses his friends. Seeing their faces on Zoom but not being able to spend time with them in person seems to have made him more moody and frustrated than before DL school started.

Yes he has a therapist he sees once a week. He is very negative about everything lately.

OP here, yes, ADHD inattentive is what my DS has too. It's causing me so much anxiety right now. It feels like he is not even trying to make the best of things. He is also partly not paying attention because I'm near by and he knows that I'll make sure he gets where he needs to go and does what he needs to do. Ughh

Mine has her ups and downs. She's weathered all of this pretty well overall, but I notice the lows are lower than usual and take longer to come out of (especially if she's angry or disappointed). We're in the process of doing some neuropsych testing for academic reasons but I honestly wouldn't be shocked if it comes back with an ADHD diagnosis. She's almost 12.

I'm 56. Sounds like an ordinary work day. Your kid's accelerated and gifted.

The bolder sounds like my 14 yo. In her case mild anxiety has been exacerbated by COVID. Seeing friends has always been her outlet, and texts/FaceTime/socially distant walks aren’t helping enough. On top of that she absolutely hates distance learning. We’re on the waiting list for a therapist, to see if that makes a difference.

Like a roller coaster. Super happy, then super angry. Very Jekyll and Hyde

Our girls are happy as clams. 6th and 8th. They are pretty much loving life. They are thrilled with DL, they love being at home all day, they are having a blast bossing around their younger brother and he is lapping it up. This being stuck at home stuff has actually been great for us.
