Dealing with Peri-menopause symptoms

Anonymous
Okay, I'm finally coming to grips with the fact that I am well into peri-menopause. So far my symptoms are not severe - some vaginal dryness (which I can easily address with lubricants), shorter period (yeah!), less precise cycles, and varying sex drive (which I've figured out is due to fluctuating hormones month-by-month - I must have more estrogen some months than others). I am not ready to consider hormone replacement therapy, but would like to try to do something to make my hormones more regular month-by-month so my cycles stay regular. Has anyone found anything to help? Acupuncture? TCM? I have the basics down in terms of regular exercise, eating well, etc., and I'm TRYING to keep the caffeine and alcohol down to a minimum.

Maybe I'm silly to think I can fool with Mother Nature, but a 31 day cycle one month followed by a 27 day cycle the next month is making me nuts.

Post menopause here.

My doc gave me a vaginal cream with hormones for the dryness. I generally avoid using it if I can because I don't like adding the hormones to my system but she did say this was less invasive than taking hormones orally. Something you could consider.

However as result I do a lot more foreplay with dh so he will climax sooner when we have intercourse -- which is not that comfortable for me nowadays even though I still come.

Be gentle with yourself. Things that helped me are Mindfulness Meditation, Yoga, Mani/Pedi, associating with positive people. Good Luck with this. The good news is, it doesn't last forever.

There was an article about this in Prevention magazine a few months ago, written by a woman who was grappling with managing her symptoms (forgetfulness, angry outbursts, hot flashes). She wrote the after researching it, she followed this list:
- no sugar
- no caffeine
- no alcohol
- enough sleep every night
- yoga every day

After 2 weeks her symptoms improved dramatically. After one month she was feeling awesome and slacked a little... and her symptoms came roaring back. Her conclusion: who can live like this? It's too hard to manage with hormone replacement.

I am also peri-menopausal, but my symptoms are somewhat different. My periods are unbelievably heavy (think giant clots -- I know TMI, but we're all adults here) and irregular. The mood swings are insane.

My sister recommended a natural progesterone cream (made from yucca root or something). I haven't tried it yet. Has anyone tried something like that?

Honestly, at this point, I have no time for regular yoga and I can't live without my caffeine.

I meant to type "It's too hard to manage withOUT hormone replacement."

OP here. Thanks for your replies. I really don't think I can live without sugar, caffeine or alcohol for the next 10 years, but maybe I should just try to cut out the caffeine. I have a preschooler, so daily yoga is just an impossibility.

Really....this is going to cure vaginal dryness?
Didn't think so.

My Gyn put me on Loestrin (a low hormone birth control pill) which took care of the problem. I was still fertile at the time (two years ago), so I needed to use birth control anyway.

Lucky you!!!!!! My gyn refused to do that (although she said it would be the course of treatment) because I have a history of migraines.
