| DC has ADHD and high IQ. The ADHD symptoms are better now, but earlier ES challenges caused enough of an academic slide that DC has just caught up to grade-level expectations. Above average in math, and extremely knowledgeable on all things science, but reading and writing are average. Is LCPS's gifted program worth pursuing? DC placed in the evaluation pool. Seems like DC would need a gifted program based on cognitive ability, but would that be a mistake based on the fact that DC is not academically advanced in all areas? Would it be better to stick with the gen ed classes and see if they can provide differentiation in STEM subject areas? Or just supplement at home in those areas? Are there other kids in the gifted program who have ADHD, or will DC stand out? |

I think you need to do some reading about how the FUTURA program is structured at your school. In most schools in LCPS, barring those in the pilot program, the gifted program is essentially a one day a week enrichment program. It is not more advanced academic work in core classes.
I would reach out to the Search teacher to see what the program is like at your school and discuss your concerns. |

My daughter is in LCPS gifted. It’s simply enrichment, both in elementary and middle school. In ES it’s a 1 day a week pullout and in MS it’s instead of study hall.
It is not academic at all. It’s entirely enrichment. It’s like like FCPS where it’s a separate curriculum. |
| ^^^NOT like FCPS, that was supposed to say. |
| Thanks. Anyone know anything about the information sessions they usually hold around this time of year? Everything seems delayed re: LCPS gifted programs (even the evaluations for rising 4th graders are delayed and those students aren't receiving gifted services yet). So I don't want to nag the gifted resource teacher about it if she's got bigger fish to fry. |
My guess is that info sessions will be held virtually. Keep an eye on this page for updates. https://www.lcps.org/giftedandtalented |
| Because your questions are specific to your child, I'd email the Search teacher to set up a time to talk through the choice and what the program looks like at your site. It's nice of you to worry that they have a lot on their plate, but they are there to help you with this process. |
