The dog hates being alone. I want to get up early and go for a run. The rest of the family wants to sleep a little later. If I leave dog alone he will go into someone’s bedroom and jump into their bed. If bedroom doors are closed he will sit outside and cry. We leave the crate open and he often goes in there to sleep, but barks if he is locked in there. No matter where in the house he is, the sleepers can hear his barking. Tomorrow I’m going to try leaving a sheet over the crate but i don’t think it will work. Any advice?
He can’t run with me because he’s small and too slow. |
| Can you give him a Kong with frozen peanut butter in it to keep his mouth busy. |
I see people pushing dogs in strollers, bike trailer/stroller combo things, etc on the W&OD trail a lot |

You get your dog a dog. I know, you just reacted in horror. But it's not double-the-work. It's just a little more work, and your dog will be happy.
Dogs are so social; they suffer terribly when alone! (Don't get a puppy--now that would be too much work.) The other idea is to have the dog sleep in some late sleeper's room. |
Yeah, crazy people. |
| Let him jump in bed with a late sleeper. |
| I’d put him in with the late sleeper who likes him best/can fall back asleep. |
| We lock our dog in the crate overnight for basically this reason. I suspect he barks to be let our because he knows that works. If you didn't let him out for barking, would it stop eventually? Like sleep training a kid. |
I walk and feed our dog first, put him in the crate, and then go for my run. Otherwise he’ll wake up the house. |
None of them will fall back asleep; they'll get up and be cranky later. Well, the kids will be cranky later and my DH will be cranky right away. I'll try the kong; that's new. |
| I give both my dogs a treat when I leave the house for similar reasons. Started years ago with my first dog when I lived in a Condo. Now they associate me leaving with treats and they’re happy. I would try the Kong with PB too like the PP suggested. |
+1 a dog stroller is the ideal solution. Everyone wins. |
| Can he sleep all night in one of the late sleepers bedroom? |
I would try the kong, and then this if that doesn't work. |
I would add to practice during the day so it doesn't drive everyone crazy. Put pup in crate, give treats when he's calm and quiet. Ignore when barking and don't let it out until it's calm and not barking. Repeat. |
