Do people in general crate their dogs at night?

Anonymous
Not just puppies or for puppy training. DH wants to get a bigger crate to continually crate the dog at night, now 15 months old. We have him in a room at night with a lot of windows and sometimes shadows set him off. I’m working on DH to let the dog upstairs... at least for the kids.

We do. It was recommended to us by our breeder. We have tried letting him sleep in a closed room downstairs but he too got barky around 3 or 4am and I cannot take that. He also weirdly got bossy, like he was top dog in charge of the house. He does much better in his crate where he feels safe - rarely barks in there, it would take a break-in basically to set him off. He's 3 now by the way.

No we don’t. Golden retriever. She sleeps on our bed. We used the crate only during potty training.

No. Well the crate is a safe place for our dog, he has full access to the house at all times. He is house trained and doesn’t chew things. When we are all gone, he typically just sleeps in his dog bed in the family room. I had another dog that had to be crated when home alone as he would get into the garbage and eat inappropriate things. He had to have stomach surgery two times. I don’t have the same issue with this dog.

How does this work out? Our dog sleeps with us too but if my DH even puts his arm around me, our dog drops a toy or a bone between us and tries to engage us in playing with him. The dog has killed our sex life.

Put a towel over the crate so thAt the shadows don’t bother the dog.

I've had five dogs in my life, never crated any of them.

Not OP, but The dog doesn’t seem to be crated now. OP is trying to avoid the crate at night but her OP wants to use the crate.

I mean her DH wants to use the crate.

No.

I've had 7 dogs in my life & have never had a crate. We have a Border collie who has a hidey hole under the piano, that functions like a crate with an open door, but none of the other dogs have ever been interested.

Crating Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog would be insane, as they are bred to walk around all night patrolling.

No, I want him to catch the thief!

No. Just when he was a puppy. When my lab was about 10 months we let him sleep wherever he wanted (except not our room).

No, it would take up too much room on our bed.
