If you had 650K to spend where would you live?

We currently live in the outer suburbs and would like to live closer in. We've lost a ton of money on our house but simply hate living out here. DH works in Silver Spring but loves commuting on public transportation. He does not wish to live in Silver Spring and we'd consider Maryland or VA. Any ideas? Of course schools are an issue and he's a freak about crime. We would need three bedrooms.

I like Garrett Park he likes the Kentlands but it is not much closer than we are now.

Olney? There are probably buses to Silver Spring, but Metro would be kind of a waste, as there would be no point in going 2 stops from Glenmont.

King Farm is a little closer in than Kentlands, and has a similar (and in my opinion, nicer) feel. As you may have read on here before, you want to live on the Rockville side, not the Gaithersburg side, for school issues.

PP here, sent before I had a chance to add DO NOT move to VA with a commute to SS. It will make where you live now seem super-awesome.

We got a 3 bd house for under 650 in Chevy Chase MD. we love the neighborhood - close to Bethesda metro, shops and restaurants, great schools, and convenient bus to Silver Spring.
Of course you will have to make some sacrifices, e.g. house on busy road, not updated - but for us it was worth it.

The obvious choice would be Silver Spring. Why doesn't your husband like it?

Takoma Park maybe?

Garrett Park is nice, as is Kensington and you might find something in your range in parts of Kensington right now. Either of those towns would put you on the MARC train which does, I believe, stop in SS.

VA would be a nightmare. You will want to stay on the red line if your husband is going to metro in. Transferring = PITA.

Unless that purple line ever gets built.

PS: DC? I live 4 miles south of SS off 16th street around the Tivoli theater. Crime would not be something your hubs will want to deal with, tho.

Do you need a SFH? If you are willing to move to a townhome or condo, you could try parts of Bethesda-good schools all the way through. The problem with DC, of course, is that many people don't like the high school options.

Have you searched this site?

It is the best for really canvassing the areas you are looking at...I'd go for Kensington or Chevy Chase...there are some great deals out there.

If you like Garrett Park I would look in Kensington (Parkwood & Kensington Estates) because assuming you are looking at public schools, Kensington Parkwood Elementary is better than Garrett Park Elementary. For $650 you could find a 3 bed/2-3 bath in Kensington Estates. There are LOTS of kids in the neighborhood, and the Cedarbrook Pool is a nice neighborhood pool. Your husband could walk to the Marc train.

If you do look in Kensington, be careful what school cluster the house is in--could be WJ, Einstein or BCC.

WJ and BCC are great, Einstein not so much.

If I worked in Silver Spring, I'd live in Howard County. But maybe that's where you are now?

OP Here. Thanks for the suggestions. We are in the burbs now and I really really want to be close in.

As far as schools I go - I get WJ and BCC are great, but are the elementary schools in those clusters also great?
