The AAP and the FDA do not recommend them, because they offer little benefit and have serious risks. The ones that contain benzocaine are both dangerous (benzocaine can cause methemoglobinemia, a serious and potentially fatal condition). The homeopathic ones can have inconsistent levels of dangerous substances, including belladonna.
