My pediatrician advised against them, and recommended frozen bananas and frozen washcloths, putting teethers in the fridge to make them cool, etc.
The AAP and the FDA do not recommend them, because they offer little benefit and have serious risks. The ones that contain benzocaine are both dangerous (benzocaine can cause methemoglobinemia, a serious and potentially fatal condition). The homeopathic ones can have inconsistent levels of dangerous substances, including belladonna.
