Has anyone bought a portable AC for a dorm room? Given how much time they will be in their rooms due to covid, and the dorm's reputation for being really hot during the early fall, I'm wondering if we should get DS a portable AC. Anyone have any recommendations for a not-too-expensive model? Thanks.
Check with your student's division of residential life to confirm that this is allowed without a special circumstances exemption. I don't think that you can just show up with one of these in tow at most dorms.
check first. most likely not allowed unless doc's note.
My dd and her roommate have a bunch of fans and it’s fine. My dd hates the heat and is a chronic complainer so if she is ok with fans, anyone can be.
Dont you think it matters where you go to school? What type of dorm? What floor? |
It is specifically forbidden at both of my kids schools. My guess is at most schools. They do not have the power to have everyone doing that.
No chance at all with A/C. If the dorm does not have it, there is no way the wiring in the rooms would be sufficient, or even that the windows would allow for venting. Like thousands before - students will make do with fans and being hot until Fall kicks in.
The virus lasts longer and spreads better in dry air. Humidity affects its ability to travel. Better off opening some windows and sucking it up.
Leave the door open and put a box fan in the window like everyone else has done in their dorm rooms since the beginning of time. She’ll be fine.

fyi "portable" AC units are actually huge, quite heavy, and very loud. I had a dual vent one that was very effective at cooling (cost $500), but was nearly 100lbs and the size of a mailbox. It also took a lot of rigging the windows to properly seal it off. They're not some small rolypoly thing you can just easily move around to cool.
They may not allow window units, but portable ACs are big and bulky and probably also not allowed. Just give them box fans. |
Thank you all! This has been helpful.
Also, there is no reason they should stay in their rooms all day. Many schools have set up tents, portables and other areas for online classes and studying. Encourage your kids to get out of their rooms and take advantage of these facilities if available. The fresh air, exercise, and change of scenery would be good for them.
My kid asked for one at their off campus apartment. I just laughed at them and told them they are welcome to spend their summer job money buying one. Otherwise, open the window and use the fan I bought you freshman year.
Get two box fans. Position both in window(s) one blowing out and one blowing in
We got a Dyson air filter/cooler. Not cheap, but I think it helps more than a fan.
