We want to buy a laptop that adults and kids (7 & 10) can all use for school and work. We prefer a PC, not Apple. I'm intrigued by Chromebooks and similar devices with touchscreen capabilities, but we definitely want a laptop, not a tablet. We're flexible on price.
Any suggestions?? |
| Reconsider macs! They are much better. You can install MS office if that’s needed for work. |
Interesting. The vast majority of our use will be internet or internet-based Google Drive. Does that change your recommendation? And thank you! |
Nah, don't bother. Overpriced, unnecessary. |
NP. So what would you recommend?? |

We needed a laptop for my K student to use for virtual learning and replacement for an old MacBook for home/personal use.
Obviously depends on budget, but we ended up with the HP Envy x360. It’s a 2-in-1 tablet/laptop. Was slightly concerned my K would have tough time getting hang of it after only using iPad previously, but so far, so good. Still working out most efficient set-up for easy logins to learning portals. Set us back $1000 at Costco. BestBuy had almost identical specs for about $100 less but we preferred Costco for return, warranty (and almost immediate shipment). |

I have had good luck with Acer:

The Dell XPS 13 is my favorite laptop.
The HP Spectre x360 is nice too, but it's too big and heavy to use as a tablet. So, I generally prefer the Dell. Chromebooks have a lot of advantages, but if you intend to share it, I'd probably recommend a Windows or Mac laptop over a Chromebook. |
