How did Joe Biden's law school plagerism surface in the late 80s? Aren't school records private?

I listened to NYT's The Daily podcast during my morning jog and they mentioned he lifted speech lines during his '88 run for potus. Then he exaggerated law school grades and scholarships – then said he was accused of plagiarizing a paper in law school (I think his first year?). It seemed like the law school plagiarism did him in back in '88 because it made it seem like a habit.

Most of the old articles on this are pay-walled. How exactly were his student disciplinary(?) records made public? I can't recall any other instance of someone's school records being so public.

I think the real question is whether Biden's exaggerations (lies) helped his political career, similar to what Elizabeth Warren did.

Who cares. We currently have a pathological liar in the White House. Google John Barron.

"Then, it was revealed that Mr. Biden had been disciplined as a first-year law student for using portions of a law review article in a paper without proper attribution."

When he admitted to the law school plagiarism -- he got an "F" in the class -- Biden said, "I did something very stupid 23 years ago." He described it as a "mistake" that was not intentional, said The Post. "The record showed that in a meeting on Dec. 1, 1965, the law school faculty found that Biden had, 'without quotation or citation,' lifted five pages from a published law review article and used them in his 15-page paper for a legal-methods course," reported The Post.

How is such a thing revealed?

It seems he released all of his academic records. But I'm not sure if that was before or after it was revealed he plagiarized. Releasing your academic records if you know there's a F (teases out cheating) and a plagiarism remark in the records seems silly, so I'm guessing he did that after he was caught?

It looks like he released his school records:

However, he did so after newspapers noted that he was plagiarizing others' speeches, and then subsequent reports that he plagiarized in law school--which he admitted.

I couldn't find how the newspapers caught wind of the law school plagiarism. I can only guess that the speech plagiarism led some enterprising reporter to dig further, and he found someone who knew Biden in law school and was willing to talk.

What does release your records mean? As in, you're given your full records by the school and then give them to the press? Or you just allow the school to release records to the press? I'm wondering if maybe he didn't realize there was a plagiarism write-up in the records.

I don't get how these verified details all surfaced about him from college but we've never seen Trump's Wharton records or how about Kushner's time at Harvard and NYU Law.

Biden is a fundamentally decent person and has not threatened to sue the school and the person releasing documents into oblivion as Donnie has.

MLK plagiarized. It’s common knowledge.

Didn't Trump's niece claim he paid someone to take the SATs for him? Hasn't he also threatened to sue if any school releases his transcripts? Sorry Trumpsters. Every time you try to throw something at Biden - we can find something equally if not worse that Trump has done.

No, he hasn't. The question is whether Biden learned from his mistake. He might have, but these days he seems to be stage-managed, so my concern is those he has surrounded himself with in his campaign and potentially his administration. If he wins, and he's not careful, Biden will end up like Jimmy Carter.

I think we currently have President that is about to end up like Jimmy Carter. He has so turned off voters that it could be a decade or more before the damage is corrected (it took 12 years for the Democrats to overcome the stigma).

They said the same thing about George W. Bush.

biden is a fundamentally racist person who has been credibly accused of committing a vile sexual assault and to this day continues to touch women inappropriately.
