Forming a virtual school pod - does each family have to register for payroll service?

Anonymous
This question might have been asked already, but I can't seem to find the answer after searching. We are forming a pod for virtual school starting at the end of August. We are 3 families and the pod will consist of 5 children. We are planning to pay on the books and use a payroll service. Does each family have to register and pay for the payroll service separately? (the caregiver would then get 3 checks every pay period). Or can one family sign up and then we all 3 split the cost? It seems like such a waste of money for all 3 families to have to pay for one of the services. Does anyone know the answer? Thanks!

I would talk to the payroll agency and see if they can give you a discount for all using the same one but yes you will probably have to each sign up for it. Each family will need an EIN and the payroll service is remitting taxes on behalf of each family so the fact that it is a share/ pod doesn't really decrease the work for the payroll service.

Exactly. And one family doesn’t want t be on the hook for more than their “share” of the teacher’s salary if another family bails.
