I am hoping to take my kids to a lake for a few hours tomorrow - any suggestions of lakes open to the public, where mid week social distancing will be easy, relatively close to Arlington? Thanks! |
Should also add we are hoping for a lake with sand!!
|
To swim??? |
Mostly to play on the shore but the ability to get in a foot or two would be a plus! |
I would not go in any lakes around here. There’s true lake, but you can’t swim. You could drive to mats leave state park. It’s the bay and you can swim. It’s about an hour from arlington. |
Ugh matapeake state park.

And Burke lake not true. Terrible autocorrect. |
No natural lakes in VA. Non really swimmable but some do but risk illness |
Leeslyvania State Park in Woodbridge has sand and a beach area, but it’s a riverfront and not a lake. I believe Mason Neck in Lorton has the same. |
Thanks — leesylvania state park looks like what we are hoping for! |
I second these. The closest true swimming lakes I know of are at Cunningham Falls & Greenbrier State Parks in MD, about 1.5 hours away. |
Crazy crowded on weekends. |
Be aware. There are jellyfish and recent shark sightings off Kent island. |
