Go bags

Anonymous
Freshman have been told at my kids school to consider bringing a “go bag” in the event they must move out of their dorm or dorm room quickly do to covid. Aside from medicines, laptop, books, pens/pencils supplies, and some clothes, what would you include? As it stands now the plan is to move healthy kids and keep sick kids in place.

Toiletries and snack food, like protein bars just in case they get stuck waiting in lines for testing.

MASKS.

Hand sanitizer

They won't be given an hour to pack? This sounds silly. They'd be running from a virus, not the mob.

Medicines and laptops are used every day. They can't just sit in a go bag.

The idea, I’m sure, is to not leave these things strewn about on a daily basis. Always be ready to leave. That’s how my friends who lived in war zones lived.

Course materials, underwear, toiletries, medications, hair care stuff....but I think this is a bit silly, because you do use these things everyday.

(but dear god bring the chargers!)

I live in a country where we have a Go Bag at all times. It mostly won’t apply but here’s how I have ours set up:

In the bag at all times:
Passports
Keys to US car and condo
Important docs (birth certs, marriage certs)
500USD big bills
100USD small bills
3 days of essential medication
Tiny first aid kit + disposable masks + hand sanitizer
Granola bars, rehydration salts
1 change of clothes for each family member
“Grab list” that says: computers, iPads, meds, and a few other things I’d not want to forget but if my mind was racing I might forget.

This sounds really stressful.

I feel bad for these kids, and am glad that my DC chose to sit this semester out.

Attach a list to the bag of things that you use everyday and can’t keep in the bag, but you’d want to take with you. If you’re in a rush, or even if you have an hour, you’re bound to forget something. This is what I did when I was pregnant so I didn’t forget things like my glasses and chargers.

My kids school said you would not be allowed back to your room if notified of exposure. I want to see how that plays out. They said university personel will not enter a dorm room or aprtment for 3 days. So I guess you just sit in your current clothes? I just told DS to have his charger at all times so he would not lose to use of his phone.

How stupid. Is this the college plan now? It’s on you to have a “go bag”?

They’ll be given enough time to pack. It’s not World War Z.

In this situation I would just be prepared to overnight my kid what they needed.

So student attends an off campus party on Saturday. Health services learn on Thursday that multiple students at the party tested positive, and they attempt to do contact tracing Fri, Sat and Sun to find all students who could have been exposed.

On Sunday while your student is out for a run, she receives a phone call telling her she was possibly exposed and should quarantine. At that moment, she won't be allowed to go back to her dorm room, but must report to some specified quarantine location, and no one will go back to her dorm room for at least 3 days to pick up some stuff for her for the 14 day quarantine? No one is res life is willing to go back to her dorm and get some things from her (empty) room?

(And they are complaining about teachers not wanting to teach in a classroom full of children.)

Where are they quarantining? Will they want to bring an extra blanket or pillow? I'd definitely bring shelf stable snacks, cash and credit cards. Chargers of course, and toiletries.
