| Does anyone know whether there are credible concerns about using Google Classroom and Meet? I mean issues like undisclosed tracking or excessive permanent academic segregation, not the obvious and manageable concerns like background noise and interruptions. I can’t tell what’s absurd and what’s a real possibility. Feeling overwhelmed. |
I teach at a school that uses Google. I guess I'm not sure why you think that the things I bolded would be more likely with google than with another platform, or even why they'd be more of a problem than in person. |
| I don’t understand what you mean. Tracking? Oh...academic tracking? No. I’m not concerned. At all. |
| I don’t trust Big Brother at all. Just another way for the The Man to take control of our young. First web cams, then mass “vaccinations” then they will colonize Mars based on the most gifted children based on their google academic patterns. Google knows what they are doing and they must be stopped for the children. |
OP here .. I think you’re being sarcastic, but yes, these are some of the things Apple News is serving me. I want to laugh and roll my eyes, too. Was just curious whether anyone knew more than I do about any of it. (Also, I read Edward Snowden’s new book last month and still feel creeped out in general.. as I type on my phone, I know...) |
Excellent. I'll tell my kids to start flunking unless they want to go to Mars. |
This might be the perfect motivator for my kid. I'll just tell him that no one makes you do chores on Mars and he'll probably start studying like crazy! |
I think OP was asking how it all works and if it’s a real risk. Didn’t say he/she thinks it. Asked if anyone had more info was all. I’m also curious now. |
I think the answer is no, there are not credible concerns. |
I am the PP you quoted. I don't know what risk she's asking about. She's using vague educational jargon. How does she think that Meet is going to lead to segregation that's different from Zoom or Microsoft Teams? I don't even have a sense of what she's talking about. |
Undisclosed tracking, I'd say yes. But that's not limited to kids in school, that's everyone all the time. I don't think it's anything new or different though. Segregation? Huh? I'm not sure what OP is going with there or what that means. |
| I think the concern is whether our kids are going to be tracked more now and locked into academic groups or tracks earlier or more inescapably than they would otherwise. Doesn’t seem like there’s any alternative to any of it though, so what can we do, right? |
What? Because teachers are using Google classroom, students will be "tracked" academically more than they would be in the classroom? ("tracking" in this instance doesn't mean surveilled, it means placed in one instructional group and kept in that group.) Why should using Google Classroom and meet cause this to happen though? |
