My husband would like to take our DC (age 8) to learn skiiing ... we didn't grow up around here so he doesn't know where might be good. I would like to tag along to make it a family vacation but have ZERO interest in skiing ... the very idea terrifies me! Can anyone recommend a reasonably close by venue that would have nice facilities for me while the boys go ski? Would prefer to not have to fly and we live in NOVA. Thanks!
Allegheny Springs at Snowshoe - it's a nice hotel, there is a little square to walk around with a Starbucks, there is a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, there is a spa downstairs.

7 Springs in PA, hands down. They have a lodge that has everything from an indoor pool, hot tubs, spa, indoor bowling, indoor putt putt, restaurants, big fireplace just to sit with a cup of coffee, and more. Check out their website. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from this area.
I'm a non-skiier in a family with 3 ski fanatics (DH, DS and DD all love it). DH has made a real effort to try to find ski resorts that I might like, but the bottom line is that ski resorts are for skiers. Even with a pile of great books, DVDs, your laptop, knitting, and whatever else you might enjoy, you will still be bored out of your mind. My advice to you is let them go and have a great time doing their thing without any guilt, while you stay home and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Try the Homestead Resort. They have a small hill that is great for beginners and a great spa, afternoon tea, etc for you. We were just there and it was awesome! They are running a special of $249/night for lodging and unlimited winter activities (e.g. ski lift ticket)

OP here. Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions! I suspect 18:22 is probably totally correct, but I feel the need to at least try it one time.

18:22 here -- You're a good sport, OP, and I hope it works out for you. Even if it doesn't, you should get lots of brownie points with your DH and DS for being such a trooper.
